| Court Computer Wiz ![]() | Guys, Reefshadow is right, we need to keep this a little calmer...Any of a number of us have fish that can potentially outgrow the tank we are keeping them in and while some bought them planning to upgrade ohers might not have put that thought into it and bought on impulse. Some of the tangs, triggers, lions, and wrasses come to mind as ones that commonly end up in tanks that will not house them adequitely if they survive to reach full potential growth. It's a pot calling the kettle black kind of thing..... Proud, I'm more concerned that your getting into something that you aren't ready for. As Reefshadow said, these rays take alot of work to keep the environment like it needs to be for them. Unless you already have a great deal of experience in keeping freshwater fish that require special water params, I'd pick something else to start the tank up with. If you are really ready at 14 to make the kind of commitment it will take to keep the rays healthy, go ahead, but if you're not, ask some of the freshwater folks about some other interesting fish to start out with. JMHO

| Scopas Tang ![]() | The store is the culprit here. How many unassuming customers buy some sort of livestock that the store wants to get rid off? Way too many that's for sure. It's up to us the customer to inform ourselves and make knowledgeable purchases. Proud appears to be informing himself by asking questions and I give him props for that.

| Torch coral | What ever happens to that theory that fishes only grow depending on the tank size that they are kept? For instance a 5 years yellow tang(very common)kept in a 100 gls. will be so small compare to one in their natural environment .I dont know what kind of fishes you guys are keeping that grows so fast? David if you are still here with us(I hope so)I say to you;Can you just try one first?3 is too many. And also read some books about them. And please fellow reefers I know he's only 14 years old, treat anyone with respect,it does not matter the age. What matters is the enthusiasm that he 's showing. I hope my comments does not start any war now.I'll save my energy for something more productive! VINA

| Totally stoked dude ![]() | You'd be much better off building an aquarium for FW rays. These guys actually make great pets, if you can provide for their needs, keep in mind these are not the typical rays you see out in the ocean or estuarires. I have seen several lagoon type tanks that people build with either plywood and epoxy or pond liner, usually exceeding 800 gallons. Do a search on google for these guys and you will find some very very impressive setups. As a pet store manager I do agree these are not fish that a store should be selling however. Also, not to sound offensive or anything, but you'd be better off ask this on something like alt.aquaria or a FW related board. Especially one that focuses on large FW fish like arrowana, red tail cats, pacus, etc. And to those that doubt SW rays can be housed in aquaria. I would like to mention I did help maintain a 20 by 30 foot by 2 foot deep tank that housed local rays and skates. Our southern stingrays actually exhibit mating behavior in captivity. The filtration on this tank is crazy though, not something for a house , Imagine how loud a 13 foot long overflow wall is ![]() Mike |
