Condi and Domino

So do domino damsels usually host to a condi.....I'm new with my aquarium and thought clowns were the only ones who did that?

Re: Condi and Domino

FYI there are no condi's which are found in the ranges of clownfish so clowns have never seen one in there natural habitat. That is probably why they don't host them.

Re: Condi and Domino

It depends on the individual fish. Some will and some wont. Even though they don't see them in the wild sometimes tank-bred ones don't know to NOT host in them. It's really luck of the draw. And I wish you the BEST of luck

Re: Condi and Domino

Thanks everyone for your comments. So my Condi moved last night. That was pretty scary. The ppl at the fish store said that it could eat my fish or shrimp. Has anyone had any problems with that?

Absolutely.
I had a condy eat a bi-color angel once. Just the bones left.
Most fish are smart enough or fast enough to stay away but it is always a possibility.

Re: Condi and Domino

The condi can and WILL move around until it finds the perfect place in your tank. Unfortunately that's not usually where you WANT it

And yes they are predators. They will catch and eat slow, weak or otherwise un-alert fishies if they can.

Re: Condi and Domino

Well luckily it didn't eat any of my fish last night and yes Big Al it did move to somewhere I didn't want it to be.

So lets talk about live rock...A couple of my peices look totally different from the time that i got them. They've changed colors...most of the rock that i bought was the beautiful purple color...but now it's lost some of that purple color. Is that normal?

Re: Condi and Domino

Yesi t's normal. It depends on your lighting and the amount of "die-off" you have. The reef tank is constantly changing and evolving right in front of your eyes. Even corals will change colors over time due to light and other tanks conditions. Changes are the rock is having some die-off because the lights are different than what it was raised under. This can happen from too much light or too little. If I had to bet I would say your "normal" lights (guessing they are probably just standard fluorescent lights sold in a tank kit) are not able to sustain the growth that your live rock had when you bought it.

Does this help any?

Re: Condi and Domino

A little....Me and my boyfriend decided not to do coral until next year so we we're gonna wait on the lights and everything. So if I was to get the bright light let say in 6 months would that make the rock change back to a pretty color or would it be too late......what about that chemical purple up? have you heard of that? and would that work?

sorry about all the Q but I love learning about this tank.....this is the best investment I've ever made.

Re: Condi and Domino

I once had a condi that ate my coral banded shrimp!

I'd avoid the use of Purple-Up. It has been reported to contain phosphates, which are not good for your tank. Let the coraline algae grow naturally. That means keeping an eye on your Ca, Mg, pH and Alkalinity and keeping them in balance.
