| Neon dottyback | QT Tank question I have set up a QT tank to go along with my main tank so that I wont have to medicate the main and kill LR etc. I bought a 10g tank ready to go (came with lid/light/whisper filter/heater). I also put in some pvc pipe and will tape up some construction paper on three sides to help with stress. My question is, can I just put in some of my LR and eventualy remove the whisper filter? Then if I do need to medicate that tank my LR will get killed but wont the dead rock still allow the good bacteria to live on it? Or do I need the whisper filter to house the good bacteria? Basically I dont want to deal with replacing the filter cartridge every month after the tank cycles, I would just rather have it setup with a power head and some LR (maybe eventualy dead rock..hehe). Plus I dont even understand how you can replace the cartridge every month because wont that remove all the good bacteria? Thanks.

| Re: QT Tank question The problem with using LR in a QT is the fact that if you should have to use medicine it will not only kill the LR but be absorbed by it and leach it out later at unknown levels. Most medicines we use include copper which when absorbed and later leach out will kill any inverts in that tank. I have used LR for a kick start on a QT tank but remove it before medicating. As far as replacing media, I keep a chunk of media sitting in my sump to throw in the QT when I need it. I would think with a cycled QT and low low bio load (empty) you wouldn't need to replace on a monthly schedule. |

| Tiger Shark | Re: QT Tank question The premiss for a QT is to medicate & or treat sick or injured fish & coral the less you have in it ie Rock & sand the less likley thet the disease or bad bateria will continue.
