Question when to add cheato

Hello everyone, hopefully a few quick questions here:

1. when should i add cheato to my refugium on a new tank
2. what type of light is recommended? seems i've read everything from a normal floodlight to vhos
3. will it survive a cycle (might tie into question 1)

thanks,

Drew

Re: when to add cheato

You should be able to add it right away, although I waited until after my cycle. The cycle probably won't harm the chaeto, it'll take up the nitrogenous compounds that it can use, but any hitchhikers you get in it like pods might suffer. And since there's no real need for it until the cycle is complete and you start adding livestock, I'd personally hold off. I light mine with a standard shop spot fixture (around 8 bucks from any home improvement place) and an exterior compact flouresent spot. You can see the kind of bulb I'm talking about at melev's reef.

Re: when to add cheato

I honestly couldn't tell you, might have been 32 or 19, but I'm half a world away from my tank right now. Find one in that range that has a clear lens, not an opaque one. Look inside to make sure it has a bulb that forms loops, like the compact flourescent bulbs used to save energy in a home.

Re: when to add cheato

Wouldn't adding Cheato now in fact possible prolong the whole cycle?

As for lighting I am running a curly-cue light from Walmart (40w replacement) in a standard desk lamp clamp-on style.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: when to add cheato

allen, i just dont know the answer to that. I added mine after it was cycled, but i dont see why it would prolong it.
But if it were to prolong it, then as soon after the cycle as u can
i bought a simple flood light as well and it works great

Re: when to add cheato

I can't remember why I was thinking it would prolong the cycle.. maybe I'm dreaming this up as we go... but for some reason I was thinking it would extend it some.

Re: when to add cheato

I have been wrong SO many times in this hobby. Fortunately nothing tragic (yet).

I agree that Cheato and a Fuge are the single best thing I have EVER done for my tank. It was the biggest bang for the buck too. It's officially a MUST have for any and EVERY tank I have from now on.

I have had chaeto under PC's it worked out just fine keeps the growth down to so you are not pulling it out every week & trying to get rid of the extra

Re: when to add cheato

I added mine as soon as i got it. That was the same week i set the tank up. Doni sent it to me
Allen, some tanks don't even go through a cycle. It all depends on the quality of the freshwater added and the live rock. I don't see how keeping nutrients down will slow a cycle either. But it is worth finding out about it. I think you brought up a good question there.
