Nitrate Removing Methods...

Hi all,

What are the effective methods of removing nitrate in a reef tank?

1. water change
2. nitrate remover (chemicals?)

I read some where on the net about some plants that consume nitrate..

anyone wants to add more info? thanks

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

I think you are referring to macro algae.. It is put in a refugium with light and it feed/grows off the nutrients in the water...

I wouldn't add chemicals to the water, also reduce nitrates by monitoring feedings , and having good filtration like skimmers and live rock...

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

The solution to polution is dilution....

An established DSB will remove nitrates.

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

The reason I'm asking this is because my 20g tank is at the end of the cycle. The nitrate level is at 30 PPM as I tested today. I wanted to know I should perform a water change or let the tank sit another week before a w/c?

Would the nitrate level go down by itself as the tank matures?

Currently I have 27lbs of LRs, 20Lbs of Live sands and Remora Skimmer in my tank. No live stock yet.

I would appreciate some advices..

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

If your Ammonia and Nitrites are Zero, then I would do about a 50% water change to bring down the Nitrates a bit and then start a normal water change routine.

Ok, thanks. I will wait a couple more days until I can confirm the cycle is complete before doing a w/c.

50%? that's goign to be a lot of R.O water.

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

Well you can do several smaller changes if necessary.

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

One large change will reduce the nitrates more than several small ones. Get a water container from your local store and store/transport the ro in that. I have 6 seven gallon containers that I use to hold my ro water since it is hooked up to the kitchen sink. A few days of making water gives me plenty for my usual 35g water change. Then I just mix it with salt and a power head in a rubbermaid trash can.
IMO it is a good idea to keep some water around and handy for emergency changes if/when they become necessary. That is why I have more containers than I really need.

Can I break the 10g into two times of 5g each? Is this good enough?

one 10g change will reduce trates by 50%. two 5g changes will reduce trates by 40%.

No, that is not a 50 % change but 2 25 % changes = 43.75 %

There are only 4 wasy to remove NO3-

1. A refugium which using macro-algae

2. Water changes

3. Sand bed or live rock through FAD (Faculative Anaerobic Denitrification )

4. AZNO3, more or less a chemical means. http://www.marinedepot.comaquarium_a....asp?Ca rtId=

Re: Nitrate Removing Methods...

Do you guys know about anaerobic bacteria that live in the sand bed and they will convert nitrate to gas???

I was thinking whether or not it will happen in my tank, probably not any time soon..
