How would you get rid of the worms in your tank?

Hi all,

I just set up my tank yesterday and I've already seen one small worm in the tank. It probably came with the Live rocks.

A tank that has too much nutrient may cause the over population of the worms. Would they be able to survive in a tank that has no live stocks in it? if so, for how long?

My question is how would you get rid of your worms in your tank? Are there any fish or shrimps that would hunt them down?

Thanks

Leave them alone, most of the worms you will encounter will be beneficial to your reef.

Many fish will eat worms if they can catch them, but most are harmless and can be a good addition to your cleaning crew. Unless they get really big or are proven to be a harmful worm, I would leave them be. If you really want to get rid of them you can get a worm trap. It's a tube and you put bait in the middle. The entrance is designed so the worms can get in but not out.

Re: How would you get rid of the worms in your tank?

Ok thanks. I will leave them along for now.

I added several grocery shrimps in my tank and when would I see an Ammonia spike?

I just tested Ammonia and the result was 0.

Re: How would you get rid of the worms in your tank?

There is a hole on top of the skimmer cup cover. There are a lot of bubbles and foams coming out of that hole. Should I use a tissue paper to block that hole?

I dont want it to drip to the floor...

any idea? thanks

What kind of skimmer? Off of the top of my head I would say the hole is there for a reason so don't plug it up. You may want to adjust your skimmer to run a bit less wet. That should handle the problem for you.

It's a remora hang-on skimmer. I already moved the cup level up. maybe move it up a little more..

BTW, having so much foams and bubbles in the skimmer's cup, does it indicate something is happening in the water?

I had tested run my skimmer on a fresh water tank before n I've never seen so much foam an bubbles in the cup. Is it because the salt in the water?

Have you tried closing the valve on the air hose a bit?

Re: How would you get rid of the worms in your tank?

I agree with everyone about leaving the worms there as they are beneficial to the tank as scavengers.

However, if you do decide to remove them, use some protection on your hands as those vristles can hurt and if you are lucky enough to get a fire worm they really hurt a lot. I mean they REALLY REALLY hurt! Be safe do NOT pick up worms with your bare hands.

Here is a thread that you may wish to read as well about the Reefkeeping Dangers!
