Re: pistol shrimp and goby

Maybe this will help.......
The name Symbiotic Shrimp comes from the equally beneficial relationship the Pistol Shrimp has with gobies (e.g.;Amblyeleotris or Stonogobiops). The goby, with better eyesight, warns the shrimp of predators. The shrimp share its food with the goby. Depending upon the species, Pistol Shrimp may also have symbiotic relationships with sponges, corals, or anemones (e.g.; Bartholomea annulata).

Re: pistol shrimp and goby

They hang out together

The pistol shrimp is constantly cleaning/making tunnels, the goby stands guard and grabs food. It's very fun to watch, because otherwise you will not see the pistol shrimp very much, but with the goby guarding the tunnel, you will see the little pistol shrimp working it's butt off.
It's one of the things in my store that customers stare at for a looooong time just watching and watching and watching. They can be quite and entertaining pair to watch.

Re: pistol shrimp and goby

i love both my shrimp and goby, but they havent gotten together yet, however last night when i did my water change i added some red wine and played some micheal bolton, so im hoping!!!!!!!!!

i have a bulls-eye pistol and a yellow watchman, and really i think they are starting to get used to each other, the goby has become a lot more mobile lately and is getting closer and closer the the shrimps burrow

Re: pistol shrimp and goby

I'll have to ask my LFS how they do it. They almost always have pistol/goby combos for sale, and they are are ALWAYS buddied up. This weekend I actually saw one Candy Stripe pistol sharing with a yellow watchman and an antenna goby.

The bulls-eye pistol doesn't usually develop this relationship with the shrimp gobies.

Re: pistol shrimp and goby

We usually purchase our gobies and shrimp already paired up from the wholesaler. It saves the trouble, however I have a few employees that had no issues getting them to pair up in their personal tanks. Just make sure you get species that are known to pair up.
