just let it be....sometimes they die other times they will regrow a new head. your tank is still cycling so it will only add to the cycle.

Wit hit the nail on the head! Sometimes they "molt" their feathers so to speak.

Hello Sarah. Not to sound too picky, but we may need to know what your water parameters are, with numbers, just to be on the safe side. Also, where in your tank are the feather dusters' location...are they near a strong flow of water, next to something that may irritate it, etc. What other critters do you have in your tank? Something may be bothering/picking at it, or certain fish may swim past it so fast that the feather duster gets scared. I've seen this in my own tank. I've also had feather dusters lose their feathers and ones that have lost the entire cap only to have them grow back again. I really don't know why this happens, but it seems like something that the feather dusters can handle. Even some that are on live rock seem to survive a substantial amount of time out of water before finally being placed in a tank. HTH.

Sara, I don't know if this would solve any problems, and I don't know what feather dusters prefer, but I like to keep my SG around 1.025 or so. Also, I have seen (in my tank) and have read that some shrimp may pester feather dusters. I haven't kept an arrow crab in a very long time (several years), but I remember that that thing liked to get its claws into everything. Perhaps someone will chime in. It doesn't seem like water flow is an issue here. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Since your water quality is good, I'm going with Ranrock. One of your critters is getting hungry and is eating them.

I'm sorry for your loss but this is what I suspect.
