Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

I'm getting ready to get a firefish, and I read that they are quite the acrobats.

I run with an open tank - I have half-inch eggcrate covering it. Are they good enough at this jumping business that he's likely to succeed in killing himself?

Thanks!

I have two and have had no problem so far of them even coming close to the top of the tank.. they hang around on the bottom or in the middle of the tank.

Re: Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

It is always a chance. I have never had trouble with mine jumping but have several other fish that have ( a mandarin, a sixline, 2 scissortail gobies). Fortunately except for 2 (the mandarin and one scissortail) they have made it by living in the overflow until I found them. The eggcrate will reduce the chances but there are no guarantees in this hobby.
Best of luck they are cool fish.

Re: Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

They can jump and get out of the egg crate.

Firefish are very spooky, like fairy wrasses and a lot of other timid species. They'll jump out of fear of something - being chased - you walking thru the room suddenly, loud noises (my firefish HATED my surround sound and didnt like the Pirates of the Carribean).

If you are very worried about it, I might suggest attacching some window screen to the underside of your egg crate. You can use simple fishing line to 'sew' it to the egg crate. Air will still get thru, but fish won't. Make sure you rinse it so keep salt creep from building up.

Wouldn't the screen cut down on the light?
Right now I am using screen for that purpose while I acclimate my tank to mh lighting.
Generally I keep the eggcrate and have had good luck so far.
My issuee were before I added the eggcrate.

Yes, any egg crate, screening, or even dirty water will reduce the light intensity.

Re: Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

how big is your tank?
for my 24 gallon i got a piece of glass custom cut over at lowes, therefor no bending like plexiglass and not diminished light and no fish jumping out, im glad i have it b/c ive seen my wrasse hit it before, plus its cheap it was like 6 bucks and works great

Re: Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

Sad news. I reported that my fish did not jump. That is past tense. I was cleaning out the tank and moving some rock around to catch a Tomato Clown that was terrorizing other fish. Seems Winston and Marlboro jumped out of the tank and before I could get them. My cat decided to play with them.

So yes. They jump when scared.

Sorry to hear about your loss!
I have 4 cats and I'm sure any fish that would jump out of my tank wouldn't stand a chance!
I have eggcrate on top of my tank so, I think my chances are a little better that it won't happen.

Re: Firefish jumping: Do I need to be concerned?

So sorry!
I go with eggcrate as well. At least it reduces the chance without the heat buildup or nuisance of the glass. My tank is 6ft long and I need to have access when something needs doing.

It's this plastic grid stuff you get in the lighting dept of home improvement stores. It is easily cut to fit around lights or whatever you have. I can take a quick pic if you like and don't pick on my coraline. (LOL I need to scrape).
