| Sea Pen | I noticed some floating white stuff in my tank. Looks like ...floating white stuff...kinda like wet floating skin...my other fish were trying to eat it I tried grabbing it and it just fell apart. I looked at my lionfish and it's on it's fins! Like it's shedding or something, which I don't think they do. He seems healthy other than that, although he spent most of the day in the vertical position, but he did swim around some and has also been hidding a lot. HELP ME! Am I killing him with my water perameters? Nitrate 80-100 ()I'm trying to get it under control Did a 5 gal water change then about 8 hours later did a 10 gal change...perameters are the same...I will test and water change again tomorrow. PH 7.8 Ammonia .25 Nitrite .50 Last edited by PiscesGirl : 07-13-2006 at 01:41 AM. |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Need Help Quick! I am not certain what the 'white stuff' is but it's not good. You need more surface aggitation if things are settling there. It sounds like your tank is cycling. Adding the large lion and eel at once would have significantly increased the bioload and began a cycle. I highly suggest that you continue to do large (20 gal) daily (or every other day) water changes daily until the nitrAtes are down to 10 ppm or less. I would not feed until the cycle is complete. To make water changes easier you can get a large Brute trashcan to mix newly made salt water in. Add a pump or powerhead for circulation and a heater and let mix for a day. Then all you have to do is attach a long vinyl hose to the pump/ph and let it pump the new water back into the tank for you. You will still need to hand carry the old water via buckets but atleast it will reduce 1/2 of the labor... As always, test the newly made salt water PRIOR to using it for temp and salinity (if you have a reef, also test for calcium, alkalinity, magnesium).

| Torch coral | Re: Need Help Quick! cool. keep up with the water changes. when my ca and alk was through the roof it took about 2 weeks and 4-5 water changes (every few days) to get things back in check.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Need Help Quick! I believe he was referring to the high trates. That is a pretty high level, but unfortunately I had higher in the beginning and most things made it. Please go on a severe waterchange schedule. I would do about 30% maybe more every 2 or 3 days until they get down to at least 20. Definitely do not add anything else livestock wise to the tank. It really needs to stabalize first.

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | Re: Need Help Quick! I was meaning the trates. And the ammonia, the eel can take it but the lion is a bit more delicate. The reason i mentioned the bit was from what your seeing floating could be torn flesh. NBD really but there irritated for sure in that water and could lash out. |
