Heater Location

Is it absolutly nescessary to place the heater in the aquarium? Is there any reason why the heater can't be place in the HOB power filter?

Will it fit and not touch the sides, i see no problem. Mine is in the sump by the pump.

No it doesnt need to be in the aquarium. I personally have mine in my sump, and I have heard of a few people putting them in their CPR backpak skimmers...

In my skimmer, there is a hole in the top where the optional uv sterilizer would that fist a heater without the hook thingy perfectly, so I have mine in my skimmer, one less thing hanging inside my tank, and there is canstant flow around it, so the temp in my tank is more consistant.

mine is in the reef ready overflow, that way i can see the lil orange light. its out of sight but easily visible, plus not being in the sump means i wont drop anything on it,,,lol

Just to throw in another option, one which I quite like for certain situations, is the inline heater.

Beware the cooking if the flow stops.....
