Ive got crabs!

Is there anything I can feed my scarlet, blue, and left handed hermits? I dont have any fish at the moment. I have been feeding them some regular fish pellets about once a week. My emerald crab died last week...i really think he starved to death which makes me feel horrible. Is there anything I can feed them? Maybe some small pieces of shrimp or something like that??? They go NUTS when I put food in the tank, they start moving around crazy and fighting over the pieces. Any help would be great.

Re: Ive got crabs!

Any prepared/frozen fishfood should be fine, algae tablets are good, even small pieces of raw seafood. They are truly scavengers, and will eat just about anything.

Most crabs sold for the reef aquarium tend to be primarily algae eaters (at least we hope they are) - so the algae tablets - or even some Nori - would probably be your best bet.

Re: Ive got crabs!

Is your tank algie free? you really don't want to feed the cleanup crew or they will not clean up. Crabs will kill each other for their homes so maybe they just ganged up on the emerald crab.
when I used to have crabs they will eat algie and whatever the fish did not get to eat, never really fed them.

Re: Ive got crabs!

My tank isnt algae free...but there isnt much either. I have one scarlet, 5 blue leg, and one left handed and they are all way smaller than the emerald....maybe they killed him, but i dont know......Does it have to be algae tablets for SW or will the FW kind work??? I dont want to feed them.....but I dont want to starve them either. Everything else in my tank is fine, my params are fine...the other crabs are fine, but my scarlet seems to be way less active. Maybe it was a defective crab, I only had him about a month.

Re: Ive got crabs!

I really don't think they will starve. When you feed the fish they will get some food also, in the mean time I would let them eat the algie.

Re: Ive got crabs!

Yeah normally I wouldnt think they would starve, but for the past two months I havent had any fish, just a clean up crew. Im begining to think maybe something must have been wrong with the emerald. The rest seem to be doing ok...although they are all alot smaller than the emerald was.

Re: Ive got crabs!

As the crabby guy I'd say they didn't starve to death. Some just die either naturally or get murdered by the others. I feed by critters as they are part of my main display in that tank. Sinking pellets are fine twice or thrice a week if you are not feeding any other fish.

Re: Ive got crabs!

Thank you, I have been sinking pellets once a week. Maybe I will move it up to twice.
