| Tunicate | new tank setup? I am setting up a 240 gallon reef aquarium and have a couple of questions. I am going with a standard filter setup overflow, bio-balls, skimmer and uv filter. I have plenty of room because my filters are relocated in the next room so i was thinking of using about 20 gallons of bio balls a skimer good for 500 gallons and a uv filter good for 500 gallons and 2 bio-wheels I also have an RO/DI system for all my water. My questions are is this sufficient filtration? I was thinking of going with a 2000 gph pump is that enough flow? and I like the jaubert plenum sand filter would it be ok to mix the 2 types of filters? |

| Yoda Poohbah~ ![]() | Re: new tank setup? Welcome to RS~ if you are going full reef, i would say no bio-balls or wheels, they create nitrates in high amounts. live rock, filter socks, and a top quality skimmer are much better. since the sump is remote located the pump sounds good for sump recirculation. but i would also suggest a closed loop or powerheads to create specific targeted flow and to increase total turnover to at least 3000gph. as for sandbed filtration, id suggest reading our knowedgebase on the variety of options available to you. lighting? an plans on what you want? once again, welcome to RS~

| Reef Lobster | Re: new tank setup? to second wit, just the return will not be enough flow, especially in a tank that size... you'll need some pretty hefty powerheads (tunzes) or a closed loop with a pretty big pump, maybe a sequence dart. welcome!
