Is it possible to use both LS and CC? one on each end of the tanks?

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

I suppose so, but I gotta ask why? Over time, any place where it meets, the sand will filter to the bottom, and the CC will end up on top. Crushed coral tends to trap lots of detritus, and makes your tank harder to keep clean. PLUS, if you have a true deep sand bed, (over 4" deep) it can help to reduce nitrates in your tank...Crushed coral won't do that.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

only reason i ask is because i just put this CC in, and hate to throw away $70 and spend $70 more, but if thats what i have to do thats what im going to do. Was just thinking that might look cool. I wanted to make a wall of live rock to hold back the CC on one small end of the tank and have most of the tank a nice sand bed. Keep the advice coming Since i still have no light im in no real big rush. Thanks

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

SmokeOne... if you want to keep the cc, be prepared to vacuum it thoroughly! It will trap detritus and could create nitrAtes galore if not kept clean. I would remove it....

As far as sand, I prefer the fine sugar sized aragonite.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

SmokeOne, you are probably going to end up taking the CC out of your tank at some point. If it is easier to do it now...I would. Chalk the $70 up to a learning experience. psssst...I am currently removing my cc at 3-4 cups per waterchange. The incompatability of CC in a SW tank caught up to me even with a rigorous cleaning schedule. ooooohhhh well.

I'm another one of the CC that wish they didn't club. If cost is a factor, alot have mentioned Home Depot playsand.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

Wow. That may be part of my nitrate problem. Right now I have about half and half live sand and CC.
KimPossible, how are you removing yours? Or do you just have the cc so you can just scoop it out?
Thanks for the help.

Just CC, so I scoop it out with a cup.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

I would hate to lose all the live sand. I'll have to figure out a way to try to sift through a bit at a time and get rid of it slowly.
Yet another project.

Thanks

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

"Sift" out of tank or you'll end up with nasty soup water.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

I was actually thinking of pulling out some of the mix into a container (probably during a water change) sifting the mix, let it settle and then add the sand back into the tank.
If anyone has a better idea I am open to suggestions.
I figured this wouldn't be any worse than adding new sand. Would it?
Thanks for the help.

Re: Sand and Crushed Coral

That sound good
I would use saltwater while sifting so you dont kill any benificial bacteria.
