Leathers and SPS

I was talking to someone in my LFS today and he stated you cannot keep leather corals with SPS. Just wanted to get some other input....is this true?

Thanks,
Stil

Re: Leathers and SPS

True= No, but that is good advice.... Leather corals produce a slime coat that they shed from time to time and this slime coat can cover sps corals and cause problems.

Re: Leathers and SPS

that's accurate... also, leathers can sense when sps is near, and excrete toxins into the water to kill the sps (chemical warfare)... or any other coral that they get wind of. but sps are like, their natural trigger point. i have a big sinularia, and no sps will be going in my tank as long as it's a resident.

Re: Leathers and SPS

just like fish, i would guess they can vary on the individual... but i do know the leather has to feel the sps is encroaching on its territory, and they have to be in a certain position in relation to the current. i would think if you're flow was random enough, it wouldn't be able to tell... but i don't know, i've just gotten warnings. maybe someone else can chime in. i do know it's possible to keep them in larger tanks, as long as they are separated.

this is a breakdown from LA on the sinularia i have... it's considered 'semi-aggressive', but it seems it's not definitely going to attack other coral.

I agree with Charlie97L "Chemical Warfare" is a unseen danger amongst corals....a Large water column with good (high) water flow (turn over) and running carbon helps keep this danger to a minimum.

Re: Leathers and SPS

I agree, if you have small leather corals, you can actually keep SPS with leather corals... having GAC can help absorb some of the toxic/chemicals released by the leather corals...

GAC = Granulated Active Carbon

Re: Leathers and SPS

I filmed a guy who has a tank with a Huge montpora cap, an it's touching his big leather, and everything seems fine. Monti's are not very aggresive, maybe that helps? I keep leathers out of my own tank, so I was surprised they were touching.

There's a video that here: www.reefvideos.com

If I'm not wrong, not all leather corals excrete slime/toxics that are detrimental to SPS... some are fine.... good water movement and use of GAC would also help alot...

Re: Leathers and SPS

yeah i think a lot of them are ok... i know sinularia in particular is notorious for attacking... BUT, if your tank has enough flow and correct placement, even then, it could be fine.
