Water Film

Week 10 of the new tank and I've noticed a film on top of the water. Chemical tests are all good, water temp 76 and holding. Do 10% water change weekly. Any guess as to cause and what to do if anything to correct?

Re: Water Film

It might be a thin film of oil... some of the new equipments leeches oil during the 1st phase of usage... try switching off the pumps and use a Kitchen Paper Towel to "suck" up the film...

Re: Water Film

i would say protien. try to increase surface agitation to break it up and your filer/skimmer will remove it. some carbon will help also.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Water Film

Protiens. They are attracted to the water's surface. An overflow (or skimmer box) with the 'teeth' at the top help to skim/remove the film, route the water to our 'protien skimmers' which then create millions of bubbles that the they attach to and are ultimately removed.

Re: Water Film

Appreciate the responces. I have the piece parts for a sump, waiting for the overflow box to arrive to assemble and fire-up the sump. Wil try the surface agitation for now, skimmer is productive, guess I need to boost it.
