Protein Skimmers

What are your recommendations on what kind of protein skimmer I should get for a 55 gallon tank?

What brand or make?
With a sump included?
Hang-on?

For a hang on skimmer i would recomend an aqua-c remora. Or step up to the Remora Pro.

Do you have a sump or are you wanting a Hang on tank style?
As for the sump style- Rea Sea Berlin 25-250 work great.

Hang on tank- Aquamedic Turbo Floater

I say it all depends on your income but a skimmer is not something to skimp on.

IMVHO, the Euroreefs (and/or the ASM knockoffs) are some of the best in-sump skimmers you will find and the Aqua C remora is one of the best hangons.

FWIW, I have a Berlin Classic and do not like it very much but others have tweaked theirs to perfection (like pro_builder).

Take er easy

If you go with a hang-on, definitely the remora or remora pro.

I had a redsea clasic, and was so sick of it, that I finally got rid of it... Picked up an ASM, and love the way it works.... I am looking to buy a second one, and will probably buy a second g-3 (http://www.underwatercreations.com/asm.htm) has the best prices I can find right now... and by the way, I am in no way affiliated with these guys...

Just a happy customer...

I've got an aquamedic turbo floter its ok and does it job but i had some initial setup problems, they have changed their pump of recent to an ocean runner 2500 with pin needle and unless you are using the (not supplied by default) extra long collar between collector and unit it would fill my cup in about 30 minutes.

Aquamedic also now recommend NOT mounting it with the mounting plate onto the glass?!?!?!

Works well now i've done all of thise things though...

If you don't have a sump, I would recommend the AquaC Remora Pro with either the Rio pump or the Mad Drive 3 pump. The Mag3 is more powerful and will allow for more filtered water per hour. You can also get the prefilter/bubble trap box for this skimmer as a future upgrade. This will help remove any buildup you might get on the surface of the water if your tank doesn't have an overflow/sump.

If you do have a sump, I would recommend the AquaC EV-120 with the Mag Drive 5 pump or the DP-560 pump.

Good Luck;

The best advice I ever took was to spend as much as I could afford (actually I stretched a little beyond that) on my skimmer. We have an in-sump Euro-Reef CS6-1. We have had very good luck (knock on wood) in this hobby so far and I attribute MOST of that success to the power and effectiveness of our skimmer.

Buy the best you can afford.
