Re: Mistakes You've Made

Another way to siphon is to put the end of the hose up to the tank return and it auto starts the siphon. All I do then is unplug the sump pump and I am good to go.

Problems..... while doing a water change I have been focused on what I am sucking up only to have the other end fall out of the bucket and a couple gallons go on the floor. .... Another time I was going to clean my sump pump and managed to crack the bulkhead fitting in the botton of the tank...... on another water change the power head I use to fill my tank via the sump came out and pumped a gallon on the floor...... another mistake was thinking I could get back into this hobby inexpensively... not..

How about mistakes my children have made-- like dropping TWO pinpoint salinity monitors in the drink. GRRRR.

Re: Mistakes You've Made

My biggest mistake so far (knock on wood, I'm a noob, 4 months in) is not finding this site BEFORE sinking money into this hobby.

Oh and while doing a water change I sucked up my blue cespitularia frag. It's Ok though. never turn and look at the bucket unless you know what your other hand is doing inside the tank

Re: Mistakes You've Made

1) Building things (eg sump, skimmer, drain lines, etc) so theyre inaccessible later.
2) Bad plumbing pvc joins leading to water on the floor and the need to replumb.
3) Not knowing what to check for when I buy used stuff....I bought a RODI in October and it took me a few months to realize the check valve wasn't in it, so water could flow backwards. .
4) The horrible thing I did this month that I don't know about yet.

I just keep a bottle of tequila and some limes next to the tank for that very reason.

Moving a running PH, oh and sucking up a mouthful of brine shrimp. Would have tasted better with some lemon I think.

Re: Mistakes You've Made

I made another oops today..

I am treating my tank with Chemi-Clean which requires the skimmer to be OFF for two days. Which means...no return water. Well I have my heater placed in the return water section of my skimmer. I just reached in to grab some zoa's that fell and the water was freeezing. I was wondering why everyone was acting so funny today!! Yikes that could've been really bad.

Re: Mistakes You've Made

Well, let's see impulse buying was a biggie with my 29 gallon biocube when first setting it up.

My biggest mistake though, was when I converted my 58 gallon FW to a salttank and had to buy overflow with a air pump. Wasn't thinking and needed to clean the tubing as it was gunked up, but didn't take out any water prior .... oh yeah, you're feeling this one aren't you?!?!?!? Took off the air line tubing making it lose it's siphon and water water everywhere from the top of the tank ... it was horrible. Then running like a chicken with my head cut off while stubbing my toe along the way to grab the bucket and hose to pull out some water before completely drenching stand and floor. YUPPERS, pretty bit mistake. lol Needless to say, I've taken water out of the tank ever since. <heh>
