Re: Refugium Layout

Putting the fuge on top of the sump would require a stand 28" tall. That puts the top of my tank at 52" + a couple 2x4s and a plywood base. Thats putting the bottom of my tank about 30" off the ground and the top would be close to 5' off the ground. Add a canopy and it's 6' off the ground. I'll have to think about that one.

It's a good idea, I just haven't wrapped my head around all this yet.

Another design. Every inch of water in the return section is .62g of water. 6" of water would be about 3.75g of water. 8" of water would be about 5g of water in the return section.

With this layout, I'd probably run the refugium about 14" deep. A 6--8" DSB and 6-8" of water on top. With skimmer baffles at 8", I would have about 17g of reserve in case of an overflow.

Re: Refugium Layout

I like the idea of the mini fuge in the sump, just have the level of the tops even. That still gives room underneath the 5.5g for overflow volume.

Re: Refugium Layout

With the tops of the tanks even and 8" baffles on the skimmer section, that gives me potentially 6.4g of water in the sump. If the sump runs at 6" water depth.

I could silicone a piece of 1/2" plexiglass into the corner and then add a few legs and gussets to hold up the other 2 sides.

Re: Refugium Layout

How do you determine how high to run your sump?

I've never done this, but I think I have an understanding of how it works. Tell me if this is right or wrong.

I'd think that you just fill the tank up until it begins to overflow. Then fill the refugium and skimmer compartments, Fill the return section up to 6" deep. Have 5g or 10g of water on hand to top it off and account for piping and pump volume. Turn it on.

Now you let it run and assure that all is overflowing and pumping correctly.

Now fill or drain the return section until it's the depth you want and then mark it with tape or a marker.

Kill power a few times and be certain it will not overflow.

Finally connect your set up to a 220 volt line to simulate the effect of a massive coronal ejection from the sun and resulting voltage spike.

Whatever you don't test for is what will happen.
