Coral Placement

Anyone know of a good site with some GOOD information regarding coral placement?

I've got three different types of trumpet coral, they're all on the sand right now, should they be?

Euphyllia is down there too... should it be?
Acan?
Blasto Mer?

It would really depend on your lighting. All the ones you have listed are moderate to high light needing corals.

I keep both types of blastos and euphyllias on the sand under 4x39w T5s and my other euphyllia is on the sandbed under 2x65w PCs.

All are doing well after about 4-6 months.

Well, right now I've got dual 175w MH... going to dual 250s soon. The tank, measured from the top of trim to the bottom of the trim is 25".

Do these grow on the substrate in the wild?

They can grow about anywhere in the wild but with your lights you can place them medium to low with your new set-up. Really the ideal thing to do is to place them and watch... if they pout (withdraw, bleach etc) move then down... if they seem to "thirst" for the light move them up. euphyllias has a lot of character and you can tell a lot about your tank by how they are acting.

Wish we had more precise answers but just too many variables.

I'm not sure of their natural placement. But with you lighting upgrade, I would definitely leave them on the substrate for now. After the upgrade you can sloooooowly move them up if you'd like. I know folks keeping acans and euphyllias in the upper 2/3rds of the tank under 250w MH with no trouble.Just be sure to acclimate them to the new lighting.

I have two 250w MHs and 8 54w HO T5s over my 100 gallon tank. I have a trumpet coral that I moved from another tank. It was under a single 150w MH. Since moving it it has tripled in size. I keep it about 14 inches from the Lights. My Frogspawns and hammers I keep on the sandbed about 17 inches from the light. All of these coral do extremley well under this very intense lighting.

I got my Borneman book out and was reading it a bit... some neat ideas in there.

Both tanks are 25 inches from lights to sandbed.

The T5 tank is 25 inches tall (Oceanic 70 gallon) and the PC tank is 22inches tall (AGA 37 gallon).

Great articles!

I have mine in various places throughout my tanks. The colors and growth rate vary depending on where they are at but all of them are doing well. Some of them you can't even tell they came from the same colony.

I agree with the lighting concerns. The only LPS corals I've absolutely had to keep off the sand are the faviidae. Otherwise I think it just depends on other factors (so long as the sand isn't getting on the coral).
