Thumbs up Coral of the Week: Trachyphyllia (Open Brains)

This weeks coral of the week is Open Brains. There are too many different types of brains with too many different requirements to do them all in one week. So this weeks focus will be the Open Brains.

Lighting: They can take intermediate- high lighting. If kept under high lighting they must be acclimated to this lighting.

Water Flow: They can take no flow up to medium flow. In my expirence they don't like a whole lot of flow.

Aggressiveness: They aren't very aggressive at all due to short sweeper tentacles used to feed.

Hardiness: They are pretty hardy, easy to take care of and aren't that sensitive.

Colors: These generally come in red or green, and combinations of both. There are some that may be purple also.

Placement: They can either be placed on the sand or on the rocks. If placing on the rocks make sure that the skin is not touching the rock as this can damage the coral.

Feeding: These are photosynthetic and do not need to be fed, although they can be fed. I myself feed mine, I just feed it what the fish eat, whether it's pellets or frozen foods.

Here are some pictures!

There ya go!

Feel free to post questions/comments/pictures!

Matt

Re: Coral of the Week: Trachyphyllia (Open Brains)

Very nice!

We just got one the other day, here it is, pic taken an hour after introduction into tank:

Just a few questions. What do you typically look for in a healthy brain coral before buying and then how can you tell it is happy in your tank?

Also, do people tend to find that the colour of the open brain tends to determine what type of lighting intensity it does best under or does it not matter?

Cheers

You want to look for skin recession, you also want to make sure that there is no skeleton coming through the coral. If it is happy they will get huge and extend way beyond their skeleton. I have mine under 400's and it has great color!

Re: Coral of the Week: Trachyphyllia (Open Brains)

My experience with these corals has been that they will bleach under intense light, it's happened to my Wellsophyllia and Trachyphyllia. They should be placed on the substrate and should be fed regularly zooplankton.

Nice thread Matt! My brain gets fed thawed pieces of fish food once a week.

Great site Robert!

Mine too has bleached under too strong of light. It does best if 1/2 under the shade and on the sand bed with 250 watts of mh (xm 10k)

Re: Coral of the Week: Trachyphyllia (Open Brains)

Here are some pics of my Trachyphyllia geoffroyi
From when I first got him just over a year ago,
eating
The clown playing with him
and just being BIG.

They really should be kept on the substrate.
When the lights come on he expands to 3 times his size
On the rocks he would surely fall and rip himself.

He is in my 12 g nano under 32w pc lights.

Re: Coral of the Week: Trachyphyllia (Open Brains)

Wow that is one of the most beautiful brains I have ever seen. This is one coral I have yet to buy for my tank, but always debated getting. This thread has convinced me... my next addition will be a brain of some sort. So keep the pictures coming!!
