Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Has anyone ever successfully kept one under PC's? If so how long have you had it? Have you noticed any coloration changes?

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Anyone ever heard of an Asterina starfish feeding on a clam? I was moving some rocks around and A starfish about the size of a dime fell off. It fell right into the middle of my crocea. The clam wouldnt open up so i couldnt get it out. He remained closed for a few days until one day he "burped" and some goo came out. He has been pinched in that area for about a month now. He slowly is opening up more and more only to reveal a hole the size of a pea in the center of him! Suprisingly he is still getting better and its slowly shrinking. The only thing I wonder is what happend to the starfish. I really hope it died and fell apart rather than cruising around the stomach of my clam. It was such a freak accident. The second pic is of my new clam guessing a crocea also but not positive.

Aquaman - not I. I waiting until I got MH before getting a clam. Though some clams will tolerate lower light conditions.

ds69 - yikes! I have lots of asterina starfish but they have never caused harm. I'm glad your clam is healing up

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Get this, I was told that Maxima Clams are high light, maybe some of you have heard the same thing. Well I have to keep my maxima's on the sand bed (30" tall tank) partially shaded otherwise they both will start getting white spots and fade, I shade them and the color comes back and even gets very dark. My Derusa on the other hand can be out on the sand bed no issues, it actually like it.

Doni, as soon as the lights come on I will take a picture of one maxima I have on rock, it's about 6" above the sand bed, then I will take a pic of clam 2, another maxima, that is on the sand bed under an overhang....

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Just make sure you get one that larger than about 3 inches, feeding all the time can be a real chore...

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

My Crocea clam has not attached and I have has it for two weeks under MH. It opens and has good color, but keeps falling over on its side. One night I saw a white foot reaching out of its back side when it was on its side. I tried moving it higher up the reef and it jumped off. Any ideas on how to get it to atttach?

There are 3 species of tridacna clams that are considered the lower lighting clams. These are T. derasa, T. squamosa and H. hippopus. They are all lower lighting clams and can be kept quite happily under pc, vho lighting. There should be no mantle color loss. Plus they are sand bed dwellers...

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Dentoid, if you can find a small flat piece of live rock or even a clam halfshell and place the clam on it and just leave it be for a while. If on the rock you can use rock rubble pieces to surround the clam so it can't fall over. This usually helps them feel secure enough to attach and then you can move the rock or shell to any place in your tank. The "foot" showing just means it is looking for a good place to attach to.

Re: Invert of the Week: Clams

Agreed, Sue. Thats what I did with my crocea, and once he was fully attached I moved him up into the rockwork. Easiest way is to get a small rock and bury it most of the way. Leave a little bit of the rock sticking up and rest the clam on it. He should attach himself within a couple of days, and voila you can move him wherever you'd like.

I have kept Derassa, and Gigas under strong PC light, I have kept maxima under a Tek T5 retro. All these clams grew fast, and did very well under this light. I saw no color changes.
