Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

How many watts per gallon do they need of PC's? I have my montis in direct light from 400 watt MH's and they are growing like crazy!

I would shoot for at least 5 wpg on the PC's.
Again they can adjust to intense lighting but can become very light in color particulalry if using the Higher PAR bulbs, AFA growth once acclimated they are a very fast grower.

Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

ok so 130 watts on a 20 would be alright? Should they be at the top of the tank with PC's? Also would they be fine with seahorses?

Thanks for the info Robert!

Matt

More than enough just make sure your cal/alk levels are consistent.

Don't see why not !

my tank has been setup for about a year now this march .I have the t5 setup (with brand new bulbs) 4 x54w on a 55 gal.for my acro my alk has been 3.5-4.5 and my ca is 450 last time i checked the other day ...this was just the other week and the whole week before i purchased it , i made sure my tank was straight just because i knew i was gonna be making a couple of purchases.

the monti i tried was with pc lighting 250w on my 55g.

i had placed both of them uptop with decent flow.

Maybe my monti wouldv'e grownif i had the t5's and my acro wouldve if i had MH.?

Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

I posted in another thread a tank dominated by SPS loaded with Acro's/Monti's and he's using T5's exclusively. Also Steven Pro who has written some articles for reefkeeping.com had a 55 gal with 4 Normal Output 40 watt lamps and his monti's were doing very well. So what I'm saying is Monti's can grow with a variety of lighting it doesn't have to be Metal Halides. Proper water parameters are just as important as lighting in growing any SPS corals.

Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

Wow! I really thought that they were just strictly MH's. Thanks for the info Robert!

Does anyone else have any info/pics they would like to share?

Matt

Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

I just love these montipora. I have several color morphs of the plating montipora, solid green, green w/pink rim, green w/purple rim, orange, red{ and it's really red}, purple, orange w/blue polyps, green w/blue polyps, green w/pink polyps, and a lime green. They come in so many different color combo's it's way too much fun to find all the different colors. I also have several of the encrusting montipora too. Those are awesome to say the least in the colors you can get from them. I have mine under 2 250w 10k reeflux.

Re: Coral of the Week: Montiopra

Here are my Monti's. I have had them about a month. Eventually I will need to spread them out, but for now they are fairly close to each other. My blenny loves to hang out on them! I thought they were dying because the edges were going light, but found out that is just new growth! (PS - I have VHO's)

Question, isn't a cup coral different? For example - like the yellow coral to the right of these?
