| Brunt of all Jokes~ | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers ok then. checks and balances. at RS we are lucky to have the experiance of many, the fear of making a wrong statement is compensated by the fact this board is gentle and eager to explain and inform, what would be really cool is if your local LFS had an open account to Reef Sanctuary for public use or guided by owner/employee. | Sunshine Reefer | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers My lfs encourages people to research and investigate. If I ask a question about a fish or coral he will reach for his books and we look it up together. Then he adds his personal experiences and I can use his laptop to research. I think I am spoiled. It is a one man shop so you are always dealing with the owner who is also a hobyist. He is also a smart business man who is more concerned about keeping your business than making the quick sale.

| Limpet | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers I have been in the hobby 12 years{freshwater}New to the reef hobby and I find that the best way to find a good advisor is first do research on your own using books, magazines, forums like this one and ask alot of questions from many different sources and compare notes. You will find many different methods but also alot of similar methods. In the case of lfs it would be wise to steer clear of large corporations and stick to smaller shops. Also ask alot of questions start with the easy then ask more advanced.Yeah I know I like to give the pet stores I shop at the third degree. Where I would start is by asking is how long they have been in the hobby. |

| Achilles Tang | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers Heres my #1 opinion for anyone trying to find a LFS...first look up all of the LFS's around you...then see if there are any salt specific stores...if so i would go to that one first as in my experience salt only stores are far more knowledgeable then your standard pet store...no salt specific stores...search for aquarium specific stores..go down your list that ways...chances are for a new person if you go into a petco to buy ur stuff vrs a salt only store you will be steered wrong more often then not...ask questions that you already know the answer to...like will a Butterfly eat corals....will a lionfish eat my baby clown...find people who live near you that are in the hobby and see what they're opinion is...for example if i go into an a specific semi-chain aquarium store origionally founded by petland with the initials A.A. i will only deal with one or two people because the rest i know for a fact are a bunch of bs'rs...over herd a guy sellin someone a juvi yellow tang for a 20g nano system...and i make sure anyone i know that they know who to talk to

| Tubeworm | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers Last time I checked there were 697 ways to have a successful reef tank. I found a couple great looking tanks in a local club and talked to the owners. Then I went and looked at their tanks in person. Went over their set ups with a fine tooth comb and copied them. If you are waiting for the "correct advice" you wont even get water in your tank. Pick a mentor, copy them. The best way to walk thru a minefield is behind somebody. Your LFS is your suppy store when you are in a bind. Not for sound advice. IMO |

| Angel Girl's Daddy | Re: Topic of the Month 02/07 - Sorting Good from Bad Advisers LFS= local fish supply. I only use them when i need something i know i need. Like food, medication and the random frag i spot when buying these items. I use to be a huge supporter of my lfs in NY but since moving I came to realize a store like that only exits there. I would hate to be just starting out in this hobby in todays lfs world. Thank goodness for the internet!
