I voted for on-line stock purchasing. I have nothing that is close to me that I would feel comfortable buying from. (Seems everyplace within 3 hours has dead fish in tanks!). Since most of my corals and fish are bought on line it would be interesting to see other's view on this topic and helpful hints.

That stinks Lin about the lfs deal. Im real big on not useing online buying because the lfs are so important to the hobby. But just so you know, i bet the online stores have dead fish in the tanks also. Maybe you could talk to the lfs owners there about getting there acts together. Your not to far off from me, if you like i can find stuff at my lfs for you. Let me know.

in a busy store (which is great) with larger livestock selections, sometimes this is unavoidable.

now, there are 2 stores in the DC area i've NEVER seen a dead fish in, or even a "not extremely lively" fish. but they tend to have lower volumes... usually only 20-30 fish, the days they get new orders in, sometimes it's only 2 or 3 left. plus, they do most of their stocking on a "by order" basis... rather than get the standard bulk orders.

if it's an otherwise good store, i always make it a point to tell an employee so they can get it out and not have it detract from business.

I voted lighting, cuz i need new lights for my new tank, but i will need to aquascape too, thats thats cool
