I was reading about them on wetwebmedia and there was someone there who had the setup with an angler in their fuge, and the fish did very well. The wetwebmedia people were all for it, too. Those guys generally seem very, very smart about things. Bob Fenner gave it the thumbs up. If it's okay with Bob it's okay with Barb!
Heck yeah, Bob Fenner rocks! We all need a creep little guy to visit when we are in the basement,.....don't we?

LOL Well, I need a Creepy Little Guy down there. He'll add to the ambiance for sure.

Did you see I have my Marco Rock and some salt water in my tank!! I had not quite enough RO water though, so it's not quite full. I'll finish filling 'er up tomorrow morning and get the up/down circulation going. I have a ph going in the tank upstairs to keep things moving and the main pump running in the sump downstairs to keep that moving. It was a FUN DAY today!

Re: Topic of the Week August 14 - Refugiums

How much area of DSB do you need for it to be a viable way to breakdown excess nutrients? Most of us can only fit so much sump under the stand. It's cut into 3 areas. By the time you fit baffles for the skimmer & return sections, You end up with a small area for a refugium. A dsb, lr & some macro is added. The flow is cut way back. Seems that in a short time this small area of dsb is no longer useful considering the entire system .That's not even considering how much an Angler or some other fish we want but can't keep in the DT will add to the mix. Maybe that small area is better used for rubble or such for pods & leave the dsb out.

This is a question I have as well. Due to space restraints, all of my equipment has to fit into a 48" cabinet. I have been looking at one of Life Reef's Berlin systems with a small fuge attached. That fuge is/can only be a 12x12x18 (7.5g) in order for it to fit in my cabinet.

My question is it still worth it to have a fuge if its going to be that small? Is running a Berlin system w/fuge as beneficial as just running a big sump with baffles?

Re: Topic of the Week August 14 - Refugiums

The DSB would need to be deeper than 4.5 inches to provide the anaerobic area for bacteria. If you are limited on space then it would be possible to eliminate the DSB, or put it in a bucket in the sump if there is room. I think ANY size refugium is better than no refugium at all. If you are limited in space for algal nutrient uptake then have your refugium be a rubble zone pod farm and use a trough such as Paul B has installed...

to be your turf scrubber. It would use stray light from your tank system and could use return water from the sump so no extra pumps are necessary. I like this idea a lot.

Re: Topic of the Week August 14 - Refugiums

I have a "Fuge" on my 10g tank and can honestly say I saw a dramatic difference in water quality within 6 weeks of adding it. Yes compared to the tank it's large.. it's approximatley 40% of the DT but that's only a PLUS! OTher than the Al in One tanks I wouldn't have another one without a Fuge.

I don't have any current pics but in my f90g's uge I have a 5" DSB, Chaeto, some other macros, I have various snails in there along with many micro brittles and tons of pods. It's lit reverse of the DT lights and since doing that (it was on 24/7) I've seen a HUGE increase in Macro growth. I know some people don't see an increase but I did. The Chaeto is exploding. I have a plethora of pods.. in fact I need to make a Pod-Palace so I can easily transport some to the DT a little more effectively than just waiting on them to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to get sucked into the Return pump.

Fuge all the way.....
