| Elegance coral ![]() | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} nice post Michelle there are many different ways to creat Proper flow, from surge tanks to pwr heads this is a very under rated topic and actually one of the most important, in any type of reef set-up there is always a commonality, which is flow another thing to keep in mind is rock and the corals themselves and their placement, as corals grow the flow can change here is a good read ![]() the first in a series http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006/6/aafeature2 Jay |

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} Michelle's quote: The one system that I would love to be able to find a way of putting on my tank is an actual wave maker, not one of those electonic things that turn pumps on and off in random order but a bucket placed above that tank that fills and empties quickly to create the most natural wave motions![/quote] Yes this is a surge tank setup. Once im done building the doors i'll be doing that next. I mentioned it in my tank journal a few months passed. The concept is to syphon water from the tank itself not the sump until a tank above it fills to a breaking point. Then the surge tank dumps the water back into the main tank causing a wave surge like on a natural reef. Theres a decent set up on a tank in the book "Ultimate Marine Aquariums". If anyones done this before id like to read about it here. The trouble with the one i saw in that book was when the surge tank was finishing emptying, it would suck air into the return causing bubbles in the end. Not very sightly. I have a few idea's on how to remedy this problem and will adress it when i build the surge tank. I also don't like the output he has on that return. Its just a bulk head and shoots a streem. i want it to be flat and wide. |

| The CodFather ~ | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} In his book 'Aquarium Corals' Borneman describes(pg. 341) the construction of his 'wave surge' flush device. looking at the diagram I believe it works in the same way a toilet tank does lol. looks something like this... http://www.jensalt.com/surge1.jpg

Am in the planning of adding some. I also kinda like these "wave surge" ideas. Something to think about. | |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} Good question Billy... I currently do not have decent flow behind the rocks. I have tried to compensate with large caves on the lower level. Doing this has worked okay, but on my next aquascaping, I will not 'stack' the rocks against the back glass so I can have better flow there.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} All my rock is in the middle of the tank so I have flow all around. My tank is viewable from 3 sides so there is room for a mag float minimum between the rock and glass except the wall with the overflow. I really think I need more flow though. I need to get out that head loss calculator I got from somebody and see what my net flow is.

| Reef Lobster | Re: Topic for the week August 7 {Flow} just so you guys know, i've been running the MJ mods on 1200s for a while now, and while they are great, and open up the ph's amazingly well, they can't be used on a wave timer. this has to do with the mj changing directions every time it turns on, which won't affect anything in it's normal configuration, but since the upgraded impellar is directional, it would be turning the wrong way. it uses a bump stop to kick back, and often gets stuck, in my experience. i don't know if this affects the life of the pumps.
