Re: Skimmer Group Buy

We just got back home from the game. As much as it pains me to say this, if I start now I will be tinkering with it until 3am. I plan to work tomorrow, come home and eat dinner and then build it and it will give me all evening to play.

I took it out of the box and man it that thing BIG!!!
My buddy will have "SKIMMER ENVY" after i get it all hooked up!

Re: Skimmer Group Buy

I have it built and running in my sink, checking leaks and the only leak i really had was between the pump and the outlet of the pump (not enough plumers tape was the problem).

The main build took very little time. The starting and stopping due to wife and kids almost put a dampener on my evening of tinkering. I just took longer to finalize it.

The big decision now is whether to put it into the sump or make it go outside of the sump. That will be decided this weekend.

I do have questions and it may be due to only ever having the "prizm of constant adjustment" for many many many years (If you are a dungeons and dragons nut - this is a cursed item and needs to be destroyed)

1. All i have at the moment is a 160gph pump (I thought it was larger until i scrapped off the coraline and saw 160). Will it work ok with that until i can purchase a larger?

2. Testing it in freshwater has not shown nearly as much bubbles as I had assumed I would have....(please forgive me if this sounds stupid)....will the saltwater be different? or is this directly related to the smaller pumpthan recommended?

3. I think fatigue is affecting my reading skills.....What does the outflow tube affect(which would be adjust via the upper nut on outflow) and what does adjusting the inside tube affect (and this would be the lower nut on outflow tube)?

4. After trial and error, I found that adjustments are best made after you turn the system off and let it drains some otherwise you will get wet.

Thanks!!!

Re: Skimmer Group Buy

As far as the mall pump the suggest a Maxijet 1200 so i am not sure on your 160. But give it a shot

Freshwater ie tap water or RO-DI water will only produce large bubbles. Saltwater will do a lot of bubbles

Bottom nut controls the water level in the condensing area. YUpper nut control the water out put

I found that out too.

Re: Skimmer Group Buy

I think that is the funniest part if you watch the video you would see there is no water in the chamber because there is no water in the skimer so we assumed it was cool to adjust anytime.

It is all to funny I had mine on the floor @ the shop when I did it in a trash can lid.

Re: Skimmer Group Buy

I made my adjustment on the kitchen counter so when I started adjusting the tube, water was all over the counter, down the cabinets and on the floor. Its a good thing my wife was downstairs studdying and its a good thing it was FW instead of SW .......Wow that would have been an A$$ kicking! LOL

I am more well rested today so I might make some changes tonight and try to load and post some pics.

Re: Skimmer Group Buy

OK, I have it in my sump and running....Here are my observations after it running for about an hour:

1. I have micro bubbles in my tank, I think i need to put something underneath the outflow of to catch the bubbles. I am 99% sure this is a sump design issue. I am open for suggestions for bubble catcher

2. The water level in the main column is where the top angles up approx 1.5" above teh D&D sticker. there is approx 1/8 of white foam above that.

3. Right now in the smaller tube..the water is overflowing the inside tube and falling about 2.5" down to the next level of water (between the inside tube and the outside tube. Is this where it needs to be?

Its tight in my sump, adjustments will be fun.....

Thats about all i have at the moment.
