Center Glass

Has anyone ever had success cutting a portion of the center glass out to help with lighting disbursement?

Re: Center Glass

My 100gal tank has 2 center braces with a piece of glass siliconed in between these 2 braces. The glass is also siliconed to the front and back braces of the aquarium.

Re: Center Glass

its a structual brace. do not remove or the glass will bow and high risk of breaking.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Center Glass

The glass measures 12"x16". I was thinking about cutting an opening in the center measuring 10"x14" leaving 1" of glass per side. Has anyone ever had success doing this?

Re: Center Glass

Personally, I wouldn't mess with that center brace in any way. Doing so, COULD weaken it, and cause the front or back glass to crack or break, and a flood to result. If you don't like that center brace, replace the tank with one that is Euro-Braced.

Re: Center Glass

I would definately leave it as is. You are talking about a major structural componenet of the tank. Cutting out 2/3's of the glass will definatelly weaken it.

What I do on our old oceanic tanks with the glass braces is increase the water level in the aquarium until it touches the glass brace. The tank appears brighter visually, dunno how it affects the actual light levels though.
