Another pod ?

I am setting up a bare bottom tank but I need to build a large pod population as I would like to get a mandarin. What si the best way to propagate them in a BB tank? Is there a plant that I could put in the tank? Is rock good enough? I do have sump is that alright, will they make back to the tank through the pump or do I need to actualy put them in the tank?

Thanks

Re: Another pod ?

How big is the tank? A mandrian can wipe out a pod poulation very quickly, however there is a way you can get a mandrian to eat mysis shrimp... the key is to get a small piece to bounce along the bottom in front of the fish... another option is a refugium...

good luck

Re: Another pod ?

I would suggest a refugium - with a "grow" light, some Chaeto and some rubble rock. It becomes a regular love fest and the little pods love it! I have a two gallon fuge for a 125 and my mandarin is a happy little camper. If you don't want to add a fuge, I would suggest partitioning your sump, add a light, Chaeto and rubble to get a start. One thing that is quite interesting, pods will live through a return trip through your sump and not get "chopped" up.

By having the separate rearing area, your mandarin won't decimate the population. There will always be some waiting to get sucked back into the main tank.

Good Luck!

Re: Another pod ?

You could build an hang-on refugium (with small holes drilled throughout) so that the pods can regenerate without being eaten by the Mandy and yet still populate your tank.

I've heard this works really well.

Why is that dave? Just curious...

I know many have had success making a little patch in one corner of a tank dedicated solely to pod proliferation. Here rock (could be cheaper base rock I suppose) rubble is piled almost like you would brickets on your charcoal grill. Pods can reproduce rapidly in this area without the worry of predation.

In my situation, I bought a hang-on refugium that I used solely for reproduction of pods. I filled it with caluerpa, ulva, and various unidentified macro algae species collected locally (like playing with fire, but I got some great pod diversity by doing so).

Also, unless you have a large tank, I would disuade you from getting any sort of fish that might compete with the madarin for pods (i.e. a wrasse, damsel, clown, etc...)

Take er easy

Re: Another pod ?

Scott, would you happen to have any spare Ulva? A small piece will do since it grows like mad!

Wish I did...

The vet school doesn't have a refugium and all my stuff at home is long gone. I wish I would have known, I was at the coast for Thanksgiving and could have gotten you pounds of the stuff.

However, if you ever need some sinularia or mushroom leathers, I think I can help you out (I will be fragging my butt off next week to clean up the tank at school).

Take er easy
