| Hey!Its not my fault ![]() | Is it ok to have spare saltwater mixing all the time? OK silly question. I once read somewhere that there is a possibility or that calcium or ect. will evaporate out of saltwater that is mixed or not used within 2-3 weeks. Reason I am asking is that I have two big drums that hold fifty gallons each. One is for R.O topoff water and one is for mixing saltwater. My boyfriend wanted to have the saltwater drum full at all times and mixing the pre saltwater for water changes..... OF COURSE we got in a huge arguement , Is it true that saltwater mixing in the drum will eventually lose or evaporate the good elements in the mix? I change 25 gallon every two weeks or of course 50 gallons monthly.... Can saltwater me mixed that far in advance? |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Is it ok to have spare saltwater mixing all the time? Only h2o evaporates leaving behind the salt/minerals, etc. Keep a check on the salinity (using a refractometer) and add fresh water as needed. BTW... arguments are fun... well, the making up is anyway ![]()

| WOLVERINE~ ![]() | Re: Is it ok to have spare saltwater mixing all the time? make sure they dont leach phosphates. mix up some water and let sit for a few days and test. some plastics leach PO4. also keep the water moving to avoid stagnation.

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: Is it ok to have spare saltwater mixing all the time? Use good food-grade mixing barrels, and you should be fine. I kept 30-50 gallons mixed at all times, and the same in RO/DI water. Did so for MANY years, and never had ANY problems with either.

| Tuxedo Urchin | Re: Is it ok to have spare saltwater mixing all the time? Oi! So Woodstock have I told you I love you lately, OK I haven't so......I love you! I looked at my 31 gal Rubbermaid covered containers that I'm using and they are #5 PP, so I guess I did a good thing Martha? I'm using them because the other slate gray Rubbermaid's that I had that were more flexible sprung leaks, and I wasn't home at the time [so typical] so I arrived with freshly mix salt water and top off water all over the floor, [well one advantage was that I FINALLY did a good cleaning of the floor, HA!]. Your posts with the # was great, tanks! Cheers! nigle !~! |
