| Fire Coral | I would have an inch or two of sand. Denitrification can happen in an inch of sand. Plus you get all sorts of creepy crawlies to observe (my 2 year old loves all the worms and such). More than 80% of sand living organisms is in the first 2 inches of sand.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Let me know if you get an algae bloom. I'm still in the very slow process of removing my 4-5" sand bed and It seems that everytime I 'disturb' it, I get an algae bloom. I've heard that the sand 'traps' phospates though I'm not sure exactly how.

| Just a reefer ![]() | Good for you Mnreefman. Now all you have to do is make sure your flow is set up to keep the detritus in the water column and thus allow it to be removed to you skimmer, feel free to pm me if you need some help along the way. Woodstock a DSB or any sand substriaght does not have any way to deal with phosphates, it cant sink them and store them like it does with most other things. If you add sulfur based products, it will sink and store them, same with basically everything with the exception of nitrogen based products, which it can off gas under the right circumstances. With Phosphates it will create a animal (bacteria and so on) to vegitation (cyano/haire and so on) cycle. mike |
