| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Oceanic vs. IO I started mixing IO and Oceanic about a week ago since both seem to help balance the other. I tested both after mixing for close to 8 hours. I used ro/di water. Although I posted the PO4 results, I need to get a second opinion because when I tested my ro/di for po4, it read 0.1 . Maybe I need new filters? Anyway.. here are my results...

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO Depends on the ratio... I think I'll go 3/4 Instant Ocean next time... The 50/50 mixture brings the ca and mg down a bit... I don't recall the exact levels now and I failed to write them down. ![]()

| Totally back ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO Time for new filters woody. How are you mixing up your mixed salt? 1 cup oceanic salt and 3 cups for every 8 gallons? or making up a gallon of water and mixing it into 3 gallons of IO? Or something like that? Also have you tested for consistency throughout the batch and from batch to batch? I've always kept my levels pretty near what you tested the IO at anyways, except when I switched to oceanic for 5 months...

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO Filter time! Which ones? All of them? I've never switched filters before... It is approx 1/2 cup salt per gallon.. I use 4 5 gal buckets filled to approx 4.5 gal of water... I have a plastic cup with scores on it. I've been doing 1 1/4 cup of IO and 1 1/4 cup of Oceanic per bucket. Today I did them in seperate buckets just to compare ![]()

| Rabid Wolverine Reefer ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO as you know Doni, ive been toying with the idea of this mix also. i just need to do the math on how to mix a 200g oceanic and a 160 IO and use both evenly and run out at the same time.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO Hummm... well... mathematically speaking.. Oceanic makes 200 gal and IO makes 160 gal... (that's at a lower salinity than 35 pppm ...so it's a bit low)... so, if you used 20% more of the oceanic, they'll run out at the same time. So mix 70% oceanic with 30% IO and they'll run out at the same time.

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: Oceanic vs. IO ... so for 5 gal.. it takes 2.5 cups.. of that 2.5 cups, 1 3/4 cups will be oceanic and the other 3/4 cups will be IO. ![]()

| Bryozoan | Re: Oceanic vs. IO Check out the new seachem reef formula.. You will not have to mix salts any longer.. It comes in very close to NSW level in all params.. I have been using it since June and it is VERY good.. With my Ca Rx running I do not have to add anything to it.. I have about 10-15% Mg granulate in my Ca Rx also and it keeps that steady at 1300-1350... I used Io for 13 yr and then switched to Oceanic for 1.5.. I will not go back to anything else since using the new formula.. I do know afew others that mix IO and Oceanic and then come in VERY good aswell when mixed... There is also a new 3 part salt with seperate Ca and Mg to add to the salt.. You can tailor it to your needs.. The reefers salt from captiveoceans.com.. Peace, Jeff Peace, Jeff |
