i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Oceanic vs. IO

I'll have the check our LFS next time I'm there and see what they charge for their bottled salt water and compare to what we are paying to mix our own. It would be interesting to know, just for the heck of it.

I'm sorry to say this but your math is really far out! You are using a 40% difference and you'll run out of Oceanic long before you run out of IO if you add it at that rate.

If you want them to run out together you need to use 4 parts of IO to every 5 parts of Oceanic.

If you want the math: You have a IO:Oceanic ratio of 160:200 divide the ratio by 10 to make it easier to work with and you have 16:20. Each part of the ratio can be divided by 4 leaving a ratio of 4:5. Therefore you need to use 4 parts IO to every 5 Parts Oceanic.

If you want that in percentages you have a 9 part solution (4+5) so you need:
For instant ocean:
4/9*100% = 44.4444%
For oceanic:
5/9*100% = 55.5556%

NOTE: Depending on specific gravity, alkalinity should be about 4.0–5.0 meq/L, calcium should be between 380–430 mg/L, magnesium should be between 1200–1350 mg/L, and strontium should be 8–12 mg/L. Between water changes some elements may become depleted through utilization. Seachem offers a full line of reef supplements for restoring and maintaining many parameters, including (but not limited to) calcium, magnesium, strontium, iodide and alkalinity.
