Pink sponge has grown over polyps,,Deadly???

OK Ive been watch this pink sponge grow and grow and grow in the last few weeks. I dont know where it came from. This coral has been in the tank for over a year.

A little of what I have noticed. The long branches grow and some have broken off do to current or critters crawling over it. The pieces that break off are now forming on 3 or 4 other corals or live rock in the tank.

My question is.. Do you think it will smother the corals. This is getting so big and almost covers these Zoos. I think it is a pretty pink and very intersting sponge.Do you think the coral will be ok?

I hope the picture turns out. Thank, Vicki

What it did was grow over the top of my zoos and killed them, so now when it starts to grow to close to any thing. I just pick and trim it back.

Sponges can be very aggressive colonizers and some species mode of expansion is encrusting. Here is a picture of my orange encrusting sponge and it has covered everything in its path except the feather dusters who poke out through the holes that the sponge can't encrust due to lack of light.

Trimming it back should not harm it. Mine is so thin it does not lend itself to trimming.

I really wouldn't think that anything growing over polyps would be a good thing. I would think they would get smothered. I am not an expert on that though as we have not had that problem. I would do as they say above and trim it off.

I agree with Gina (and others). The sponge is definitely expanding, and asserting its territoriality. Sponges are very aggressive.

This one looks like either a Leucosolenia, or Clathrina, not sure which, but it doesn't really matter. I would get it away from the zo's/polyps. It *will* smother/kill them.

As others have mentioned, sponges are very good - they provide an incredible amount of natural filtration. So, trim it back away from corals, but do not kill it altogether. Trimming shouldn't harm it in the least.

I agree with RL. Just trim it back that is what I did with mine. You will have to keep the spunge in check. So keep an eye on it. Oh yah, trimming mine did not kill it.
