can some one tell me what i got growing in my tank. on the back and sides of the glass i started to get white specks about 7 of them, after a week or so some of them got bigger they started to look like star fish. now 3 weeks later 4 of them are very large a little smaller then a dime. they seem to have a main tube shape that sticks out from the glass and many legs that stick to the glass.....not really legs more like roots that branch out and stick to the glass
they are white, don't seem to move, but the rots seem to be getting bigger
does any one know what these things are.
i got a few responses back but no one was really sure what they were, i still do not have any way to show a photo of them.
Since the last post my problem has gotten bigger a lot BIGGER
i thought i only had about seven of these things in the tank but i was very, very wrong!! today i was going to clean out my protein skimmer (hang off the back type) and to my shock i found a whole family of them in there, about 40 of them. most are pretty small expect for one, lets call that one the Queen Mother. she is about the size and thickness of a soda cap with lots of little tubes sticking out (to many to count). i did not remove any of them, from the skimmer i wanted to check in with you guys first. i know that there is not to much you guy can do without a pic. but im taking a shot
thanks for any help you might have

Looks like sponge or tunicates, either way they are not a problem and a natural part of the ecosystem that is forming in your livingroom

As Kevin mentioned, I don't think they are really anything to worry about (although mind you, I cannot give you a positive ID). Probably just a testiment to the maturation of your tank and success of your tank...

Take er easy

that pic really is not all that great its hard to see the fine detail. its one of the many in the tank. its about the thickness of the led in a # 2 pencil. the legs or roots stick to the glass then there is a main tube that points away from the glass.I wish I could get a pic of the ones in my protein skimmer. but the skimmer is tinted black so it hard to see them. there are well over 200 of them in there

Simply means the conditions are better inside the skimmer for their continued growth and reproduction. They are probably feeding on the organics in the skimmer and they get some pretty good flow.

Well, what ever thaey are, more than likely a sponge, they are not tunicates. As you know, we need a better image, close-up.

DP, what do they feel like? Are they spongey or are the calcerous (sp?) or hard as if they are made of calcium carbonate? I am assuming spongy but just thought I would ask...

Take er easy
