Salinity increase!

I made a mistake today when installing a sump in my 29. The extra saltwater i added was more saline than what was in the tank. Basically I went from 1.022-1.026 pretty quickly. All my corals have closed up, do you think this is temporary? Should I add some fresh water?

As far as the jump from 1.022 to 1.026 is not that bad in fact may be better. I keep mine around 1.025 unless your corals that you keep need a lower reading but otherwise it should be fine.

I imagine the sudden rise in salinity is normally not good and corals may have gone into shock temporarily and may snap out of it in a short time. Just keep an eye on them and if it does not look like they will snap out of it then add RO/DI water slowly to bring the salinity down.

I might be off base here but we will see what others have to offer.

i agree with johnny i think you'll be ok.my question is why are running your salinity at 1.022?i run mine at 1,025/1.026 but like to keep it 1.025.

Yes, but slowly and bring it down to about 1.025 over the course of a couple days. To bring it back down where it was, would actually double the shock of the animals. First they went up .003 in SG and then you bring them right back down the same .003.

Thanks guys, i had been lazy in testing salinity and let it drop to 1.022, wasnt on purpose.

I have done the same thing. just bring it down slowly over a few days.

well this morning Xenia is opening up a bit, others are closed but not as tight as last night, and i dont see excessive mucous coming from them so hopefully all will be OK today. Thanks for the help.

Oh by the way, it did surprise me a little that the shrimp and fish didnt seem to be affected at all. Guess its an example of how sensitive the corals are

I think the sudden spike will just keep them closed up a few days but eventually they'll perk up bigger and better. How is the sump working out for your 29?
