A tip for young players

When buying new rock or corals or whatever. I've found it is a GREAT idea to dip them in fresh ( RO/DI ) water before placing them into your tank. Why you ask ? Well. After spending countless months, money, effort and did i mention money?!?! catching and ridding my tank of a pesky Mantis shrimp i adpopted the above mentioned method. Since then i have caught about 5 mantis shrimp, 3 Pistols, bristle worms and some other REAL funky looking critters.

Trust me. the small effort is well worth it when u have to pull your tank apart and lose hundreds of dollars worth of fish to catch one of these creatures.. if at all. Just ask Woodstock. She still has hers. mwahaha.. I can still coem help you with that Doni

Wow!! 5 mantis'?? I have also heard of people quarantining new rocks corals... they place the coral several inches off of the bottom (on egg crate) and let the worms etc come out and fall to the bottom. I'm not sure that would work for mantis/pistols though since they can swim...

Hummm... I'll buy a plane ticket for one way! LOL~ Actually, I am planning on catching my mantis next weekend. I found a funky shell in my tank and Roger helped me with an ID of it... it's the remnants of a mantis molt!! So all he is doing is getting larger So... you'll be here by Friday, right?

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

dependson the piece and what is attached to it. if it is farily unlikely there is any critters in it ill just give it a quick dunk.. If it is a big bit liek the one i got today that had a lot of hole sand stuff in it i ran RO water over it for a good few minutes and then let it sit while i took to it with tweezers pulling out no less than 10 shrimp and about a dozen good sized bristle worms. I also found 12 or so crabs fmor that piece aswell.

Re: A tip for young players

Not all the shrimp were mantis.. a few were. a few pistol and some other types.. i wasnt taking any chances.. they all had to die .... hence my other thread ' all shrimp must die '

that also means i cant afford to buy cleaner shrimp.. they are about 110 bucks here.
