ongoing cyano situation driving me crazy

How many water changes does it take to to cleanse the ocean?

It has been about a month. I've been fighting back a cyano outbreak with hand-harvesting, subtrate vaccuuming, reduced feeding and water changes.

What am I getting wrong?

Here are some pics of the red carpet spreading out over my sandbed.

Forgive me father for I have sinned -- it has been nine months since my last bulb replacement. Maybe that will do the trick.

Is there any chance that your rock is leaching?
Just thinking!

Re: ongoing cyano situation driving me crazy

This is my first reply to anyone. Anyways i have been having the same problem, and with the help of some wonderful people in here, its not so bad anymore, i had my lights on for 11 hours in the day, i cut that down to 7 hours a day and scooped out as much of the red as i could get, its a lot better than it was. How many hours are your lights on for?? you might want to cut back on the hours, i know it helped me a LOT... (the lights feed the red growth) good luck and best wishes Carol

Welcome Carol!

Jim... replace your bulbs, I'll put money on that doing the trick.

Welcome Carol

Jim, continue to siphon it out... keeping your lights off for a few days will help dramatically also. Just remember, something is feeding it... the po4/silicate/nitrAtes are coming from somewhere~~

Re: ongoing cyano situation driving me crazy

Thanks all. And welcome Carol.

Our lights are on from 8:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. I will cut back for a while.

New bulbs ordered.

We lost a sand sifting star some months ago and I never found the body. Search as I might it was nowhere to be found. So it has been decaying in the sand. I saw a rise in Nitrates and thought that must be why. It has calmed down. They test at <5mg/L. I've been testing for posphates but can never detect any. TrItes and ammonia are 0.

Gina - I don't know how/why/what the rocks would be leaching. It is all live rock, no rubble base rock in there. Can you explain more what you are thinking?

Thanks again.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Very true Witty!

Jimeluiz, try taking a water sample from the area underneath the cyno... under the sand or rocks and test that for po4.

Re: ongoing cyano situation driving me crazy

All suggestions above are right on the money. One more thing, clean your overflows and your sump. Gotta cut down the the posphates and left over food will cause this.

Good Luck,

How's your water flow in the effected area? Try kicking it up some.

ditto! Increased flow will definitely help prevent any buildup.
