Same old problem... same old question

What do you think is happening to my zoas from these pictures?

I have done fresh water dips, iodine dips, searched for zoa munching nudi's and performed many, many midnight vigils looking for the culprit....what do you think is happening?

Re: Same old problem... same old question

Kim:

I have seen my zoas do the same thing. It just looks like some are closed up to me from your pictures. This may seem obvious but when my shrimp and crabs walk over them, they look just like your pictures. True something may be distrubing them but some may not be feeding either. It looks like just a few are closed up. You may be more concerned if they all looked that way. Hopefully some others will chime in!

That is my 2 cents worth...

Cheers

Re: Same old problem... same old question

They are deteriorating. They close up, don't re-open then start to "melt".

Re: Same old problem... same old question

The last picture is supposed to show the "melting".
I know it looks like the stalk of a couple zoas...but no, they are a almost completely dissolved couple of zoa's.
I forgot to mention....i have totally lost all my yellow polyps, my browns are almost gone...and now my green eyed susans look like they are next.

If you ruled out disease, and critters near them stinging, and predators?, maybe it's allelopathy?

Kim: I follow what you are saying now and can see what you are talking about. Have you lost a lot of zoas or one whole grouping of them?

Cheers

Kim can you tell me all of your water perimaters? What brands of all supplements? How much you use etc. I have seen this happen in other softie tanks, where they still hold structure and then just dissolve into powder almost.Buffer?

Does your water temp change at all or move up or down a lot? Water chemicals are you adding?? When was your last water change? And how big was it?

Re: Same old problem... same old question

How long have they been in your tank, and were they wild collected?

Did this problem begin with a fresh wild-collected colony and then possibly spread?

Re: Same old problem... same old question

Thanks guys.

My rainbow rock o' zoas has no other corals within reach, besides a gorg. I cannot rule out disease becaue I dont know what the heck is wrong with um. I do have a Majestic Angel. He is a good guy. I have never seen him nip a single coral.

This is a fairly large rock. It had 5 different types of zoa on it. I am slowly loosing them. I do have a med. size tungan branch full of red skirts(no losses...yet). It is FAR away from the rainbow rock to keep it safe.

My water parameters are all within range.
~ pH 8.0 Cal 400 Ammonia/Nitrites/Nitrates all 0 temp 81~
I use RO water, IO, keep my CA levels up with Turbo Calcium(1/8th of a teaspoon) and dose 2 drops of Lugol's Solution of Iodine every week. I do not dose anything else.

I dont believe it does.... Perhaps when I top off. For the most part it stays a steady 81 degrees.
Quote:

I faithfully do 20% water changes bi monthly.
Quote:

This rock has been in my tank for 8 months. I dont know how it was collected. I bought it at my LFS and didn't ask.

My rainbow rock was reproducing like crazy. I was even considering popping some of the yellow polyps off because they started growing off the rock onto my substrate. Then about 6 months ago I had a Toadstool that started going down hill, It was spewing toxic threads, some of them got on the rock. My yellow polyps were affected by this. Time passed and the rock started loosing more and more polyps in the fashion I mentioned earlier. I thought I had preditory Gammaridean amphipods because at night amphipods are munching on the zoas that are disintegrating(Iknow they are detritivores but can also be preditory to corals...I thought I had the preditors). I have tried to figure out for the past 6 months the problem with this group of Zoanthids.
