I don't know how well the magnetically driven pumps handle it, but pumps and powerheads may take damage with a constant on/off cycle. Think of it like stop and go traffic for your car. The wavemakers sold in some LFS have a 'gentle' on/off cycle to prolong the life of the drive.
Anyone else have experience?

Still....i think this would lead to pre-mautre problems with the unit.

Hehehe. He said premature problems with the 'unit'!!!!

Yeah, I agree. While it won't be that bad for a short time, in the long run your pump's efficiency may degrade. Are you looking to simulate day and night currents? Are you setting up a close loop or running it from your sump?

Hmmm ... well, we run our Nilsen (kalk) reactor via a Mag pump (can't remember exactly which model), and it's on a digital timer which turns it on for 15 minutes, every 4 hours.

It's been like this for about 6 months now - no issues. We've replaced the impellar once - but it's running straight kalwasser "sludge" through the pump.
