woke up to a nightmare

I woke up to day to find that the small bit of salt creep on the bottom of the tank has turned into a fast drip. not looking good at all. I pulled out the 80# of rock and 4 fish and put them in a Rubbermaid bin. got a heater and a protein skimmer running on it. I really don't know what im going to do. Right now I do not have the Time,Money or the Will to set this back up. I think im going to sell my live stock, and maybe start back up in a year or two.I really don't want to do this but I do not see any other option

Thats sad to hear, is it a glass tank? A little silicone will fix it right up.....

Sorry to hear that. Check your local newspaper and reef club for used tanks. Also, you can get another 75 for about $100 at your local pet superstore. In the end, that might be less trouble than selling the livestock, and in the end you'd be taking less of a loss.

Hang in there.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

Just cant do it right now, we just bought a house and needless to say money is tight right now. I was think of getting rid of the tank any way just to help save some money. now that this happened I think it might be the push I needed. I really love having it and I will miss it, but as you all know it is a money pit. so I will get rid of the live stock and keep the dry goods.
If there is any one around NYC looking for 80# of live rock 2 pajama cardinals 1 blue chromis and 1 blue damsel. Name your price

Re: woke up to a nightmare

I'm sorry to hear that it is an actual leak. Atleast you found it before everything gave way and was able to get the livestock out of there in time.

I definately understand that the tanks are a money pit, especially when cash is really short.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

before you throw in the towel why don't you try resealing the tank. it's worth a try and silicone isn't that expensive.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

yeah, I've sealed small leaks with silicone before. I just used a ton to make sure I got the spot. I figured overkill would be a good thing.

If you still decide to get rid of the stuff, why don't you see if you can find someone who has like a nanocube that they will trade you for your stuff. Then you could keep like the nicest rock and the cardinal fish, but not have to spend money to setup a new tank.

Ditto on the resealing, it's worth a shot. Everything will be fine in the rubbermaid container for awhile to give you time to cut and reseal. Cheaper in the long run.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

How about this? I put the fish and a few small pieces of rock into an old 10g that I have. I keep the rest of the rock in the tub with a heater and power head. But how long do you guys think I can do that for. last year I cooked the rock in the same Rubbermaid tub and it was in there for over 6 months.this time it would be for a year or more. will the rock be ok for that long or is this a bad thing to do.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

man this sucks,,,hate leaky tanks. how bout this...throw everything in the tub and put the lights over it,,,kinda like a look down tank,,,BrianE had a 300g tub as a frag/holding tank for his fish,,for a LONGGGG time.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: woke up to a nightmare

The rock will be fine in the rubbermaid same as a tank, only not as pretty. I'd put a light over it on a timer to keep that coraline and the rock live. Your fishes will be ok in the smaller 10 gal tank and you can still enjoy em.
I have also cut out old silacone and resealed an old 29 gal. It turned out fine for a couple of years so far. But last week I noticed salt creep down the seam. I wiped it off and it has not reoccrred. Gulp. I hope thats not a leak!!!!

Re: woke up to a nightmare

I agree that the rock will hold up alright ina tub as long as there is a heater and good water movement. I had my rock in such a container for nearly a year as well. Not only will the rock be alright, but it will give it time to clean itself out once again as well for when you wish to set the tank up again.

Re: woke up to a nightmare

you could plumb with an overflow from 10 gallon to rubbermaid and use it as a sump...
sorry to hear about the tank
