Live Rock Debate

I just purchased all new rock to replace the fiji rock I had. There was about 125-135 lbs of Fiji that was replaced. The new rock is about half the weight of the Fiji and takes up about the same space or a little more than the old.
Question is does the 1-1 1/2 lbs per gal hold as gospel or what. If I were to add the required amount My tank would be all rock and room for nothing else.

Any ideas on this rule and how it applies to some of the newr rock that is out there.

Re: Live Rock Debate

it think you'r actually better off now, with the rock weighing less meaning it is more porous then the old rock so actually more holes for pods and such. your in great shape good luck with the rebuild, mines coming soon too as i told u in chat last night.

Re: Live Rock Debate

Min, IMO, NO, you don't need as many lbs. of rock. Most of the recommendations are for more dense rock, like the Fiji. The better places give you recommendations like 1-1/2 to 2 lbs of Fiji, 3/4 to 1 lb of Marshall Island, etc., based on the porosity and density of the rock. If your rock is lighter (and more porus) then you would use less of it to get the same benefit...

Re: Live Rock Debate

Are you using a DSB Min or are you going BB ? I agree that with the more porous rock there is a larger surface area for bacteria so it's not necessary to have such a large amount of LR, but there are other factors to consider like the amount of livestock, skimmer, flow etc.

I have a 93 gal and only have about 80 lbs. of Lalo, Fiji and Aquacultured LR and it's been enough but I also use a DSB.

This new setup is BB with starboard bottom. flow will be from 2-1600 gph Tunze streams and about 800 gph more from the return pump. Skimmer is a Turboflotor Classic with Orcean runner pump. Lifr stock will be SPS, Clams and a few LPS.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~
