| DIY Moderator | Instead of running your drain (to the sump) from the Durso Standpipe with 90 degree elbows make your turns with 45 degree elbows. Then put a "T" at the end so the air can escape separately from the water. This will stop the splashing sound in the pipe, and the bubbling sound from the air. On the air valve on the top of the Durso Standpipe, put a peice of air line on the vavle. this stops the sucking(whistling) sound from the air vavle. Make the water in the overflow about 1" below the tank level, this will slow the water flowing into the overflow, but also stops the splashing (Waterfall)sounds.

| DIY Moderator | Oh, you can also wrap your drain pipes with Pipe insulation, the foam style. To quiet the draining sounds

| Achilles Tang ![]() | We have the tank on a hardwood floor. So first we put down a recycled rubber mat (cut to size), between the floor and the stand. Then we used a foam bath mat between the sump and the inside of the stand. Then we put rubbermaid dishmats between the skimmer and pumps and the inside of the sump. I bought a submergable return pump thinking it might be quieter. I spent a little more to buy an IceCap exhaust fan - said to be quieter than the cheaper PC vent fans from Radio Shack. Our Durso Standpipe made a BIG difference, and we have the water level way high like Pro mentions. We're still struggling with the air sucking sound at the top. It has a fluttery sound as the air goes into the pipe. Pro_builder - please say more about the air valve addition. What is the valve called? Where can I get one? (I am NOT the DIYer type, but pretty handy.) Also Pro - do you have a picture of the T at the bottom of your return? All I've been able to do to reduce that noise is raise the water level of the sump & make sure my return pipe is below the surface - and using a filter sock at the end of the return pipe has both muffled the sound as well as nearly eliminated micro-bubbles. Finally, we have cut some foam core board to size to close off the back of the hood (with openings for the fan and air intake) and it has helped to "trap" some of the fluttery sound from the Durso.) Over heating is really not an issue here in San Francisco - year 'round mild temperatures. All that and I still would like it to be quieter. (And I am afraid to visit the poor 90 year old woman who lives in the apartment below us -- she may be living with a constant buzz from above. Sorry Miss Lilly ![]()

| Midas Blenny | A diatom bag on the line to your sump can quiet any splashing, reduce salt-creep, and keep your water crystal clear. They can be hanged above the water line and will overflow when clogged. Buy two and rinse and throw dirty ones in the washing machine with your tank-towels. -R ![]()

| DIY Moderator | Jimeluiz, Here are a few pictures of the "T" that I have on the bottom of my drain line. As you can see the the water flows out the T and also sucks water in fro mthe branch on the T. This makes for a full 1" line of water.
