I have the airline about 6" long, this seems to stop the sucking Whistling sound.

I am also going to put a filter bag over the "T" to clear the water.

I put a bioball at the opening of my overflow pipe and this cuts down the slurping sound to almost nothing.

Thanks, Troy. Just looking at it I'm having a hard time figuring the dynamics behind why the T works. The 90 degree opening alows for pulling in water that does something? or the water is escaping there and somehow the air separates and exits out straight ahead? I believe you - but what is happening here that quiets the situation? Also, my pipe comes down straight, not at 45 degrees, as yours appears. Would this make a difference? Sorry I'm not getting it. Further explanation would be appreciated.

I'm definitely going to get an air valve and try that. I think MOST of the noise we still have is coming from the top of our Durso.

THANKS

Troy,

Sorry to be a little dense here, is that T at the bottom of your feed from the Durso to the Sump/Refugium? Or is it the return from the Sump/Refugium?

Thanks

EXACTLY. ReefLady said it best: When you enter your house, the hum of your tank means all is well.

Well all, I have my return to the sump plumbed straight from the Durso. My Refuge is in the middle of my sump.
I have my return line on a 45 degree angle. Maybe that is what is quiteing the sound, at the same time I put the T on the end. All I know is that it is a lot quieter.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

I made several of each, the Stockman is quieter and easier to make, no major adjustments. I highly recommend this over the Durso. I don't know why people seem not to try these, they are TWICE as quite as the Durso!

Great thread topic. As you may know I am in the process of building my 180g and 55g tanks into a fish room in the basement. The problem is I am building a Home theater on the other side of the basement with only the wall of the fish room to keep it quite. So what I am doing in several places is the following;

Wrapping all pipes with either foam insulation or fiberglass pipe insulation.

Installing insulation in the walls, and ceiling with a over lap of 1/4" foam insulation that is normally used on the exterior.

Separating all pumps with foam

Using insulated doors to the basement and to the fish room

The fish room wall is built above the ceilings height to add another barrier to sound that would carry through the ceiling.

Use spray foam around all electrical outlets

The rest of the basement will be carpeted with foam padding to cushion the floor and deaden the sound.

Looking for more ideas ..

No problem with the speakers, just stopping ambient noise.

The insulation is not just for me it's for the fish.

Well, a home theater wouldn't be a home theater without the sound dampening material they hang on the walls, also found in sound recording rooms. This would have been first on my list for quieting things in your situation John.

Foam pads, rocks, or any other item can be used as baffles for falling water in your sump. By breaking up the fall of water, it quiets the otherwise loud waterflow.

If using external pumps, the Custom Sealife Titanium pumps have gotten excellent reviews and are rated among the quietest in the hobby. you have to put your ear next to the pump to know for sure if it's working.

Excellent ideas so far folks, keep them coming!
