wow, thanks for the quick reply TG. thats amazing... so its tough to tell if the coral will have the same look in your home setup than from the LFS or another reef, right?....

As for me, I dont mind the color changes, nor have I been able to product what color the coral will change to. Some times it happens when I move things and sometimes not. I have had corals just setting in one place for months and then change color. At first it freeked me out. Now I just set back and enjoy the color changes. Now it does not happen every day. Maybe once evey few months. I just upgraded my lights to 2-250 MH, they changed again.

Hi strat, Usually, I can tell how a coral will color - but not always.

At my LFS, acros are often stressed from the collection & transport nightmare. They're often brown, and I can guess they'll color up better once they've settled into my tank and lights.

On the other hand, if I get a coral from a fellow reefer with 400W MHs, a stable and good situation for them, they might not be as colorful under my 250W MHs. A lot of the color has to do with how close they are to the lights.

If I do get an acro that stays brown or goes brown, even after a couple of months - I'll try a different spot for it until I find one that brings out the best color.

The color thing only seems to happen with sps and some brain-type corals. Oh, and of course, with zos and shrooms.

I have noticed some shrooms and zos seem to color up better if they have something nearby that's competing with them? Even on the same rock, I notice zos get more colorful at the edge closest to some lps or other coral.

It's in a funny place in the tank (top - back), so it's really hard to get a decent pic of.
It doesn't look much different now (color-wise) than it did in the April pic here.

Corals definitely change colors in my tank. I have a Pavona that was bright green change to mostly brown, but still retaining the bright green at the polyp tips (I actually like it better this way). It is sitting in the middle of the tank under the 250 W metal halides and is growing well (even nicely encrusting the rock on which it is attached). I have a Monti frag that was brown, bleached over most of it (might have had some stability problems at the time, since I lost a few other frags then as well)and is now recovering nicely with a more orange color. Even has had its first fragging, albeit unintentional (was moving the coral away from a Devil's Hand leather and it dropped to the bottom of the tank, losing a tip from one branch....mounted it on some LR rubble and it is doing great).

Remains to be seen if my Favia browns up, since I have only had it for about two weeks. So far it is still the nice teal that it was when I got it.

I have a frag of those greeen polyps in my 20 gallon under 110 watts of PC daylight lighting and they are brownish red in color. Will be getting 10,000k lighting and well see what the difference is.

The above picture is taken under 350 watts of MH 10,000k lighting.

JFYI
