    Fish in QT question.

My tank has been empty of fish for a couple weeks now. ICH. today my corals looked a little bit pissed off. I checked the parameters and the only thing a little off was my ammonia it read 0.2ppm. I thought my tank would do just the opposite and have no ammonia without any fish. Its the first time in 4 months that i have had any trace of ammonia. Why is my ammonia spiking? I'm still feeding my corals as usual. No more. No less. I fear something is going wrong with my biological filtration. I'll do a water change immediately, but I want to know the cause of the problem.

I would start by having someone else test the water....not that you're doing it wrong but anothe test might show 0. You're correct in assuming your ammonia should be 0 unless something did in there that you didn't know of.

That's a good point. Honestly I don't know of a place I could rely on. My LFS are horrible. If I'm right, what could the cause of it be?

Ammonia sources can be from household sprays such as windex and something dying in the tank. Odds are your filtration isn't crashing.

How old is your test kit and what kind is it?

Odds are, something dead in the tank, for it to spike that much. Also possible your fish were cleaning up any leftover coral food, so that may be decaying too. I'd clean off the filtration pads/surfaces with fresh RO/DI water, and maybe do a 20% water change in the DT. OR, do nothing, and re test in 5-7 days. Amonia spikes dont last, unless the filtration is overwhelmed. When there is a radical change to the tank, ie something added/dies etc, amonia spikes, but if the live rock is cycled, and the flow in the tank is good, it will disapate on its own in 5-7 days.

Thanks dd. I actually just realized i can't find any 3 of my peppermint shrimp, but my cleaner shrimp is out. Did he eat them? haha. Idk.
PSU4ME, The test kit for Ammonia, PH, Nitrites is a 8 month old API kit. The nitrate is a 5 month old Nutrafin kit. The Calcium, Magnesium, and Alk are a 2 month old Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro kit. I do have a wife and a kid so, anything is possible. HAHA
