Suggestions to painting the inside of my used canopy???

Hello everyone.

I am working on the DIY canopy that came with the 180g system that I just bought. The problem is that the canopy (and stand) was never painted or sealed, but it did have that shiny/silver/aluminum stuff stuck on the entire inside of the canopy. So the bottom part of the canopy has a fair bit of saltwater that seeped into the bottom of the framing on the canopy.

I would like to simply paint it all white on the inside and seal the outside with a stain.

So my question is, can I, and what kind of paint can I use on the inside that will adhere to the shiny/silvery stuff because this stuff is too hard to remove?

Also, will the paint adhere to the bottom of the base framing that has been moistened by saltwater? I would like to avoid having to replace the wood base of the canopy, if possible.

Thanks.

I THINK most paint the inside of their canopies with a white marine paint. My canopy is metal so I've never had to paint it

Can you get marine paint at Home Depot and places like that? If not, what other places would you recommend? Thanks.

I'm not sure that you'll be able to paint over the "shiny/silver/aluminum stuff" very well. You may need to prime it with some sort of paint that binds to metal surface first. I would recmmend that you ask at paint specialty stores for ideas and be sure to mention that it'll be used to house lights in and will be exposed to hot temperatures, high humidity levels and needs to be non-toxic once dried.

The people at home depot MAY be able to help you depending on how well trained they are, but I would lean more towards the specialty stores. If possible, try bringing some of the material to the store with you or some pictures of the canopy so they have a better idea of what you are talking about.

Hummm... A picture of your set up would be helpful.... if you can, remove the aluminum reflector before painting. Just paint the wood to preserve it then put the aluminum back on.

I'm ordering some Marine Epoxy from Rona for the stand/canopy/cabinet that I'm building.

If you want me to order you some too, I'd be happy to.

Where abouts are you located?

Hello P2BC, that would be great if you could do that. I live in North York, near Leslie and Lawrence (Edward's Garden). The closest Rona that I know of is at Warden just south of Eglinton.

Let me know if this can work out.

Thanks.

Try calling the nearest Rona and seeing if they carry any of it first.
It's called:
Circa 1850
Exterior Varnish
Marine Grade

1L is approx. $20 Canadian

It's the cheapest that I'm able to find, and Home Depot doesn't carry it.

Try them first, and if they don't carry it, I'll either leave enough of mine that's left over for you, or order you some.

P2BC, thanks for the offer. I am wondering, is this a clear varnish that is for the outside of the stand and canopy, or is this white in colour for the inside of the canopy? Thanks.

It's white, and goes on the inside of the canopy to protect the wood from any water damage. You would have to use stain and varathane for the outside of the canopy.

Hello P2BC.

Did you buy this stuff already? Is it a clear white stain, or is it more like a solid white paint?

The reason I ask these questions is that I managed to drop by the Rona at Eglinton and Warden yesterday night. They had this Circa 1850 brand stuff, but the closest thing that they had to white was something called "White Birch", which is more like a stain, but with some white in it so that it is still clear. So I didin't buy any of it for this reason. I am looking for something that is a solid white to help with the light reflection.

I did check for some kind of epoxy paint. There were two that might work.

1) Expressions Cure Coat, 1 Part Epoxy Garage Floor Paint 100% Styrene Acrylic $22 for 4L.

2) Klenk's Swiss Formula, Epoxy Enamel, 2 Part mix, $31 for 1L.

The first one is essentially what you use to paint garage floors. The second is something like the coating that is on bath tubs and sinks.

What do you guys/girls think of these products?

Thanks.

I haven't yet bought it, but I think I remember them telling me that it's white.

Those other two more than likely won't work as I don't think they are for wood. They would have to say that it's a "Marine" epoxy somewhere on the can.

Another thing that I've heard you can do is to just put several coats of Varathane on the inside on the stand and/or canopy.
Has anyone ever tried this?? Did it work??

Thank you,

Okay, I just picked up the stuff from Rona.

It's called Circa 1850 - Exterior Varnish - Marine Grade

It's clear, so what I would do is to put some white paint in the canopy first, and then seal it with this, if you were wanting the 'reflectivity'.

I'll post some pictures this evening to give you an idea of what it looks like after the first coat.

OK, I'll wait to see your pics.

Thanks.
