| Moderator ![]() | If your SG is that high, you need to start lowering it to around 1.024-1.025. I don't think short term (a day or so) would hurt but, I would be afraid to let it stay that way for too long. Take out some of the water and start adding RO/DI (if you make it). I would take out small amounts at a time so that you can lower it slowly. You don't want to shock anything by the sudden change. |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | As long as it was a steady increase your corals will be ok but start lowering it with every water change. Make sure you lower it very slowly. Also keep an eye on your other parameters that salinity effects (ph, ca, alk, etc) because lowering the salinity can lower those as well. My reef was at a similar salinity as yours is for several years... I had no idea until I bought a refractometer that it was so high. My swing arm hydrometer was several years old and wasn't reading correctly I took my time lowering it over the next few weeks and my corals were fine.

| Ichthy Inquisitor | Hey Lit: Woody and Gina's adivice is right on! As with any ecosystem's parameters any sudden change is not good. I really argee with Woody on doing this slowly. Your livestock is most likely accustomed to your tanks salt content (pH ect as well). If you increase it too quickly you will most likely put stress on your tank's oraganisms. Some of your tank's inhabitants may be able to handle the sudden change but others may not be as well adapted to it. Good luck! Cheers!

| Regular Guy Moderator ![]() | Excellent advice all! I keep my specific gravity at 1.026 or 36 ppt salinity, make sure you are using a refractometer as Doni suggested.

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | How are you measuring your Salinity ? If you are using a refract you are right where you are suppose to be, as refracts have a - .0015 error correction 1.028 - .0015 = 1.0265 NSW = 35 ppt. If it is a swing arm it is 37.5 ppt so that is 2.25 ppt to high. If it is a floating it is even higher 38.5 ppt, 3.5 units to high. Start with small changes, take a week to do it. Fish can handle more quicker changes than inverts, especially downward shifts in Salinity. Things like shrimp is a no-no, especially if they are in a molt cycle.
