same thing happened to me as Travis

I came home today and saw EVERYTHING closed up, one of my BTAs flipped over, and most of my snails all turned over like they fell off the glass. First thing, "what did you do to the tank?!?!" I asked my wife. "Nothing, I swear", she replies. "Are you sure, look at everything!!!" So I go about doing the norm of feeding the fish. Then I notice a PH isn't working. This thing is brand new, been in the tank for 1 week. Maybe it's clogged, so I shake it a little and nothing. So I go to take it out and BAM it shocks the $H*% out of me. But what I don't understand is that I had my hand in there before and nothing. I also have a grounding probe. Why all of a sudden di it shock me and didn't before? I took it out and made sure the probe was in the water and stuck my hand back in the and nothing. None of my ph's are on a wavemaker so they are constantly on. So what happened? And I don't mean, "Oh, you got shocked!" I mean why did I not get shocked before?

when something is grounded, all it means is that it is taking the path of least resistance. the current was going through the grounding probe until it became easier to go through you. when you pulled it out of the water you became the grounding probe. hth to understand.

Yeah makes sense. But why are the corals reacting if it was going through the probe?

The current goes through everything in the tank that is in its path to the ground probe. Where you wearing shoes? You probably didn't complete the circut until it was out of the water, therefore you were not the path of least resistance until water was out of the picture.

I hope everything recovers...

OK stupid question . . . . where was your other hand when you pulled it out of the water. And where was it the time before. Sounds stupid I know but I had a leaking PH in my tank and it took me ages to notice that it only ever shocked me when one hand was in the water and the other was on the lighting pendant . . . . that was the path to ground. Now I have a grounding probe and I've ditched the PH

I was wearing shoes. Okay, the probe and the ph were on the same side of the tank maybe a foot from each other. Why were all the corals on other side of the tank feeling the effects? I am stupid about electricity.

Brucey my hand was more than likely to my side or holding up the eggcrate before and during the episode.

The wife likes to mess with the rocks a lot so my first response when the corals are mad is always at her. I know what your saying though. One day
Thanks everyone

somethings can sense or be effected by lower amounts of voltage. It may be possible that you have more resistance than the aquatic life.

AC electricity flows through everything conductive. just because you dont feel it, doesnt mean electricity isnt flowing through it. if you drop your lighting fixture into a 400 gal tank, and the grounding probe, light, and all your electronics are on one side, doesnt mean you should reach in the opposite side to grab a coral or fish. you will feel it, trust me. great idea to use a probe, also- what you may not know is that seals in powerheads are lucky enough to last 1-5 years. however I have had one go out and wipe an entire tank in only 3 days from my LFS. didnt know it at the time of purchase, but I knew it when my hair felt tingly at feeding time. also- being an electrician myself, I always urge people to use the "pocket" theory. if you keep one hand in your pocket, you will not complete a circuit accidentally. its one thing to lose 400 bucks of fish, invertc, etc. but its another to damage your heart, brain or even worse.... I use a trick an old friend taught me. use a multimeter (voltmeter, 5 bucks and up any hardware store) to do a voltage check between your water and a point of ground. if you read a slight voltage (1-20 volts or more) you should inspect each unit individually. unplug each device, check, and so on and so forth. doesnt hurt to make sure. good luck with everything, and I hope to see that tank recover just fine

Perhaps lack of flow could be the reason for all your upset livestock, powerheads are so unreliable but so inexpensive.I've felt the zap myself, hope everything works out.

Warnberg, nice article makes you think. I am not sure I would want to take mine out though. I know very litle about Elec.

Corvette, what would be the proper way to test for a current since the article states there is always a voltage?

Thanks eveyone.
